¹ H3068And the LORDH559said[H8799] H3091unto JoshuaH3372, Fear[H8799] H2865not, neither be thou dismayed[H8735] H3947: take[H8798] H5971all the peopleH4421of warH6965with thee, and arise[H8798] H5927, go up[H8798] H5857to AiH7200: see[H8798] H5414, I have given[H8804] H3027into thy handH4428the kingH5857of AiH5971, and his peopleH5892, and his cityH776, and his land:

² H6213And thou shalt do[H8804] H5857to AiH4428and her kingH6213as thou didst[H8804] H3405unto JerichoH4428and her kingH7998: only the spoilH929thereof, and the cattleH962thereof, shall ye take for a prey[H8799] H7760unto yourselves: lay[H8798] H693thee an ambush[H8802] H5892for the cityH310behind it.

³ H3091So JoshuaH6965arose[H8799] H5971, and all the peopleH4421of warH5927, to go up[H8800] H5857against AiH3091: and JoshuaH977chose out[H8799] H7970thirtyH505thousandH1368mightyH376menH2428of valourH7971, and sent them away[H8799] H3915by night.

⁴ H6680And he commanded[H8762] H559them, saying[H8800] H7200, Behold[H8798] H693, ye shall lie in wait[H8802] H5892against the cityH310, even behindH5892the cityH7368: goH3966not veryH7368far[H8686] H5892from the cityH3559, but be ye all ready[H8737] :

⁵ H5971And I, and all the peopleH7126that are with me, will approach[H8799] H5892unto the cityH3318: and it shall come to pass, when they come out[H8799] H7125against[H8800] H7223us, as at the firstH5127, that we will flee[H8804] H6440before them,

⁶ H3318(For they will come out[H8804] H310afterH5423us) till we have drawn[H8687] H5892them from the cityH559; for they will say[H8799] H5127, They flee[H8801] H6440beforeH7223us, as at the firstH5127: therefore we will flee[H8804] H6440before them.

⁷ H6965Then ye shall rise up[H8799] H693from the ambush[H8802] H3423, and seize[H8689] H5892upon the cityH3068: for the LORDH430your GodH5414will deliver[H8804] H3027it into your hand.

⁸ H8610And it shall be, when ye have taken[H8800] H5892the cityH3341, that ye shall set[H8686] H5892the cityH784on fireH1697: according to the commandmentH3068of the LORDH6213shall ye do[H8799] H7200. See[H8798] H6680, I have commanded[H8765]  you.

⁹ H3091JoshuaH7971therefore sent them forth[H8799] H3212: and they went[H8799] H3993to lie in ambushH3427, and abode[H8799] H1008between BethelH5857and AiH3220, on the west sideH5857of AiH3091: but JoshuaH3885lodged[H8799] H3915that nightH8432amongH5971the people.

¹⁰ H3091And JoshuaH7925rose up early[H8686] H1242in the morningH6485, and numbered[H8799] H5971the peopleH5927, and went up[H8799] H2205, he and the eldersH3478of IsraelH6440, beforeH5971the peopleH5857to Ai.

¹¹ H5971And all the peopleH4421, even the people of warH5927that were with him, went up[H8804] H5066, and drew nigh[H8799] H935, and came[H8799] H5892before the cityH2583, and pitched[H8799] H6828on the north sideH5857of AiH1516: now there was a valleyH5857between them and Ai.

¹² H3947And he took[H8799] H2568about fiveH505thousandH376menH7760, and set[H8799] H693them to lie in ambush[H8802] H1008between BethelH5857and AiH3220, on the west sideH5857of the city[H8675] H5892 .

¹³ H7760And when they had set[H8799] H5971the peopleH4264, even all the hostH6828that was on the northH5892of the cityH6119, and their liers in waitH3220on the westH5892of the cityH3091, JoshuaH3212went[H8799] H3915that nightH8432into the midstH6010of the valley.

¹⁴ H4428And it came to pass, when the kingH5857of AiH7200saw[H8800] H4116it, that they hasted[H8762] H7925and rose up early[H8686] H582, and the menH5892of the cityH3318went out[H8799] H7125against[H8800] H3478IsraelH4421to battleH5971, he and all his peopleH4150, at a time appointedH6440, beforeH6160the plainH3045; but he wist[H8804] H693not that there were liers in ambush[H8802] H310against him behindH5892the city.

¹⁵ H3091And JoshuaH3478and all IsraelH5060made as if they were beaten[H8735] H6440beforeH5127them, and fled[H8799] H1870by the wayH4057of the wilderness.

¹⁶ H5971And all the peopleH5857that were in Ai[H8675] H5892 H2199were called[H8735] H7291together to pursue[H8800] H310afterH7291them: and they pursued[H8799] H310afterH3091JoshuaH5423, and were drawn away[H8735] H5892from the city.

¹⁷ H376And there was not a manH7604left[H8738] H5857in AiH1008or BethelH3318, that went not out[H8804] H310afterH3478IsraelH5800: and they left[H8799] H5892the cityH6605open[H8803] H7291, and pursued[H8799] H3478after Israel.

¹⁸ H3068And the LORDH559said[H8799] H3091unto JoshuaH5186, Stretch out[H8798] H3591the spearH3027that is in thy handH5857toward AiH5414; for I will give[H8799] H3027it into thine handH3091. And JoshuaH5186stretched out[H8799] H3591the spearH3027that he had in his handH5892toward the city.

¹⁹ H693And the ambush[H8802] H6965arose[H8804] H4120quicklyH4725out of their placeH7323, and they ran[H8799] H5186as soon as he had stretched out[H8800] H3027his handH935: and they entered[H8799] H5892into the cityH3920, and took[H8799] H4116it, and hasted[H8762] H3341and set[H8686] H5892the cityH784on fire.

²⁰ H582And when the menH5857of AiH6437looked[H8799] H310behindH7200them, they saw[H8799] H6227, and, behold, the smokeH5892of the cityH5927ascended up[H8804] H8064to heavenH3027, and they had no powerH5127to flee[H8800] H2008this way or that wayH5971: and the peopleH5127that fled[H8801] H4057to the wildernessH2015turned back[H8738] H7291upon the pursuers[H8802] .

²¹ H3091And when JoshuaH3478and all IsraelH7200saw[H8804] H693that the ambush[H8802] H3920had taken[H8804] H5892the cityH6227, and that the smokeH5892of the cityH5927ascended[H8804] H7725, then they turned again[H8799] H5221, and slew[H8686] H582the menH5857of Ai.

²² H428And the otherH3318issued out[H8804] H5892of the cityH7125against[H8800] H8432them; so they were in the midstH3478of IsraelH5221, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote[H8686] H5704them, so thatH7604they let[H8689] H8300none of them remainH6412or escape.

²³ H4428And the kingH5857of AiH8610they took[H8804] H2416aliveH7126, and brought[H8686] H3091him to Joshua.

²⁴ H3478And it came to pass, when IsraelH3615had made an end[H8763] H2026of slaying[H8800] H3427all the inhabitants[H8802] H5857of AiH7704in the fieldH4057, in the wildernessH7291wherein they chased[H8804] H5307them, and when they were all fallen[H8799] H6310on the edgeH2719of the swordH8552, until they were consumed[H8800] H3478, that all the IsraelitesH7725returned[H8799] H5857unto AiH5221, and smote[H8686] H6310it with the edgeH2719of the sword.

²⁵ H5307And so it was, that all that fell[H8802] H3117that dayH376, both of menH802and womenH8147, were twelveH6240 H505thousandH582, even all the menH5857of Ai.

²⁶ H3091For JoshuaH7725drewH3027not his handH7725back[H8689] H5186, wherewith he stretched out[H8804] H3591the spearH2763, until he had utterly destroyed[H8689] H3427all the inhabitants[H8802] H5857of Ai.

²⁷ H929Only the cattleH7998and the spoilH5892of that cityH3478IsraelH962took for a prey[H8804] H1697unto themselves, according unto the wordH3068of the LORDH6680which he commanded[H8765] H3091Joshua.

²⁸ H3091And JoshuaH8313burnt[H8799] H5857AiH7760, and made[H8799] H8510it an heapH5769for everH8077, even a desolationH3117unto this day.

²⁹ H4428And the kingH5857of AiH8518he hanged[H8804] H6086on a treeH6256until eventideH6153 H8121: and as soon as the sunH935was down[H8800] H3091, JoshuaH6680commanded[H8765] H3381that they should takeH5038his carcaseH3381down[H8686] H6086from the treeH7993, and cast[H8686] H6607it at the enteringH8179of the gateH5892of the cityH6965, and raise[H8686] H1419thereon a greatH1530heapH68of stonesH3117, that remaineth unto this day.

³¹ H4872As MosesH5650the servantH3068of the LORDH6680commanded[H8765] H1121the childrenH3478of IsraelH3789, as it is written[H8803] H5612in the bookH8451of the lawH4872of MosesH4196, an altarH8003of wholeH68stonesH5130, over which no man hath lift up[H8689] H1270any ironH5927: and they offered[H8686] H5930thereon burnt offeringsH3068unto the LORDH2076, and sacrificed[H8799] H8002peace offerings.

³² H3789And he wrote[H8799] H68there upon the stonesH4932a copyH8451of the lawH4872of MosesH3789, which he wrote[H8804] H6440in the presenceH1121of the childrenH3478of Israel.

³³ H3478And all IsraelH2205, and their eldersH7860, and officers[H8802] H8199, and their judges[H8802] H5975, stood[H8802] H727on this side the arkH3548and on that side before the priestsH3881the LevitesH5375, which bare[H8802] H727the arkH1285of the covenantH3068of the LORDH1616, as well the strangerH249, as he that was bornH2677among them; halfH413of them overH4136againstH2022mountH1630GerizimH2677, and halfH4136of them over againstH2022mountH5858EbalH4872; as MosesH5650the servantH3068of the LORDH6680had commanded[H8765] H7223beforeH1288, that they should bless[H8763] H5971the peopleH3478of Israel.

³⁴ H310And afterwardH7121he read[H8804] H1697all the wordsH8451of the lawH1293, the blessingsH7045and cursingsH3789, according to all that is written[H8803] H5612in the bookH8451of the law.

³⁵ H1697There was not a wordH4872of all that MosesH6680commanded[H8765] H3091, which JoshuaH7121read[H8804] H6951not before all the congregationH3478of IsraelH802, with the womenH2945, and the little onesH1616, and the strangersH1980that were conversant[H8802] H7130among them.
