Now I want you to make a promise to me. Promise to me before the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry a girl from Canaan. We live among those people but don’t let him marry a Canaanite girl.

Melchizedek blessed Abram and said,


But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I promise to the Lord, the God Most High, the One who made heaven and earth—


So make a promise to me here before God. Promise that you will be fair with me and with my children. Promise that you will be kind to me and the country here where you have lived. Promise you will be as kind to me as I have been to you.”


The Lord, the God of heaven, brought me from my homeland to this place. That place was the home of my father and the home of my family. But the Lord promised that this new land here would belong to my family. May the Lord send his angel before you so you can choose a wife for my son.


Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “Your son Esau married Hittite women. I am very upset about these women. Why? Because they are not our people. I’ll just die if Jacob marries one of these women too!”


Isaac called Jacob and blessed him. Then Isaac gave him a command. Isaac said, “You must not marry a Canaanite woman.


Esau saw from this that his father did not want his sons to marry Canaanite women.


This marriage will show we have a special agreement. Then our men can marry your women, and your men can marry our women.


Judah met a Canaanite girl there and married her. The girl’s father was named Shua.


Then Jacob said, “Make a vow to me.” And Joseph vowed to him that he would do this. Then Israel (Jacob) laid his head back down on the bed. [254]


Then Joseph asked his people to make a promise. Joseph said, “Promise me that you will carry my bones with you when God leads you to that new land.”


Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said, “Lord, the God of Israel who sits as King between the Cherub angels. [237] You are the God—you alone—of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth!


Hiram also said, “Praise the Lord God of Israel! He made heaven and earth. He gave a wise son to King David. Solomon, you have wisdom and understanding. You are building a temple {\cf2\super [19]} for the Lord. You are also building a king’s house for yourself.


This is the answer they gave us:


So I told those men that they were wrong. I said bad things to them. I hit some of those men, and I pulled out their hair. I forced them to make a promise in God’s name. I said to them, “You must not marry the daughters of those people. Don’t let the daughters of those foreign people marry your sons. And don’t let your daughters marry the sons of those foreign people.


You are God!\par Lord, only you are God!\par You made the sky!\par You made the highest heavens,\par and everything in them!\par You made the earth,\par and everything on it!\par You made the seas,\par and everything in them!\par You give life to everything!\par And all the heavenly angels\par bow down and worship you!\par


The Lord made heaven and earth.\par And the Lord welcomes you! {\cf2\super [580]} \par


Praise the God of heaven!\par His true love continues forever.\par \par \par


“You must not use the name of the Lord your God in a wrong way. If a person uses the Lord’s name in a wrong way, then that person is guilty. And the Lord will not make him innocent.


That neighbor must explain that he did not steal the animal. If this is true, then the neighbor will promise to the Lord that he did not steal it. The owner of the animal must accept this promise. The neighbor does not have to pay the owner for the animal.


“Be sure that you obey all these laws. Don’t worship false gods. You should not even speak their names!


You might choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons. Those daughters serve false gods. They might lead your sons to do the same thing.


“I make this promise by my own power. And when I make a promise, that promise is true. The thing I promise will happen! And I promise that every person will bow before me (God). And every person will promise \{to follow me\}.


The Lord says,\par “Family of Jacob, listen to me!\par You people call yourself ‘Israel.’\par You are from Judah’s family.\par You use the Lord’s name to make promises.\par You praise the God of Israel.\par But you are not honest and sincere\par when you do these things.”\par


People now ask blessings from the earth.\par \{But in the future,\} they will ask blessings\par from the faithful God.\par People now trust in the power of the earth\par when they make a promise.\par \{But in the future,\} they will trust\par in the faithful God.\par Why? Because the troubles in the past\par will all be forgotten.\par My people will never again\par remember those troubles.\par


\{The Lord says,\}\par “Tell this message to those people:\par ‘Those false gods did not make\par heaven and earth.\par And those false gods will be destroyed\par and disappear from heaven and earth.’” {\cf2\super [81]} \par


I want those people to learn their lessons well. In the past, those people taught my people to use Baal’s {\cf2\super [102]} name to make promises. Now, I want those people to learn their lessons just as well. I want those people to learn to use my name. I want those people to say, ‘As the Lord lives …’ If those people do that, then I will allow them to be successful and I will let them live among my people.


Get married and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons. And let your daughters be married. Do that so they also may have sons and daughters. Have many children and grow in number in Babylon. Don’t become fewer in number.


If you do those things,\par then you will be able to use my name\par to make a promise:\par You will be able to say,\par ‘As the Lord lives.’\par And you will be able to use those words\par in a truthful, honest, and right way.\par If you do these things, then the nations\par will be blessed by the Lord.\par They will brag about the things\par that the Lord has done.”\par


You must not use my name to make false promises. If you do that, then you will show that you don’t respect the name of your God. I am the Lord!

A woman must stay with her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, the woman is free to marry any man she wants. But she must marry in the Lord.


“You must respect the Lord your God and worship only him. Never leave him. When you make promises, you must use only his name.


Respect the Lord your God and serve only him. And you must use only his name to make promises. {Don’t use the names of false gods!}


People always use the name of someone greater than themselves to make a vow (promise). The vow proves that what they say is true. And this ends all arguing about what they say.


So now, I want you to make a promise to me. I was kind to you and helped you. So promise before the Lord that you will be kind to my family. Please tell me that you will do this.


His father and his mother answered, “But surely there is a woman from the people of Israel that you can marry. Do you have to marry a woman from the Philistine people? Those people are not even circumcised.” [109]
