Now I want you to make a promise to me. Promise to me before the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry a girl from Canaan. We live among those people but don’t let him marry a Canaanite girl.


But you must follow the Lord. The Lord is the God that brought you out of Egypt. The Lord used his great power to save you. You must worship the Lord and make sacrifices to him.


That person doesn’t respect the people\par that hate God.\par But that person shows honor to\par all the people who serve the Lord.\par If he makes a promise to his neighbor,\par then he does what he promised to do. {\cf2\super [81]} \par


But the king will be happy with his God.\par And the people who promised to obey him\par will praise God.\par Why? Because he defeated all those liars.\par


“You must not use the name of the Lord your God in a wrong way. If a person uses the Lord’s name in a wrong way, then that person is guilty. And the Lord will not make him innocent.


You must serve the Lord your God. If you do this, I will bless you with plenty of bread and water. I will take away all sickness from you.


“I make this promise by my own power. And when I make a promise, that promise is true. The thing I promise will happen! And I promise that every person will bow before me (God). And every person will promise \{to follow me\}.


The Lord says,\par “Family of Jacob, listen to me!\par You people call yourself ‘Israel.’\par You are from Judah’s family.\par You use the Lord’s name to make promises.\par You praise the God of Israel.\par But you are not honest and sincere\par when you do these things.”\par


People now ask blessings from the earth.\par \{But in the future,\} they will ask blessings\par from the faithful God.\par People now trust in the power of the earth\par when they make a promise.\par \{But in the future,\} they will trust\par in the faithful God.\par Why? Because the troubles in the past\par will all be forgotten.\par My people will never again\par remember those troubles.\par


I want those people to learn their lessons well. In the past, those people taught my people to use Baal’s {\cf2\super [102]} name to make promises. Now, I want those people to learn their lessons just as well. I want those people to learn to use my name. I want those people to say, ‘As the Lord lives …’ If those people do that, then I will allow them to be successful and I will let them live among my people.


If you do those things,\par then you will be able to use my name\par to make a promise:\par You will be able to say,\par ‘As the Lord lives.’\par And you will be able to use those words\par in a truthful, honest, and right way.\par If you do these things, then the nations\par will be blessed by the Lord.\par They will brag about the things\par that the Lord has done.”\par


The people make promises and say, ‘As the Lord lives.’ But they don’t really mean it.”


\{God said,\}\par “Judah, give me one good reason\par why I should forgive you.\par Your children have abandoned me.\par They made promises to idols\par And those idols are not really gods!\par I gave your children everything they needed.\par But they still were unfaithful to me!\par They spent much time with prostitutes.\par


You must not use my name to make false promises. If you do that, then you will show that you don’t respect the name of your God. I am the Lord!


Jesus said to the devil, “Go away from me, Satan! It is written \{in the Scriptures {\cf2\super [52]} \},


“You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, ‘When you make a vow {\cf2\super [68]} (promise), don’t break that promise. Keep the vows (promises) that you make to the Lord.’ {\cf2\super [69]}


Jesus answered, “It is written \{in the Scriptures {\cf2\super [63]} \}:


“Now, people of Israel, listen! What does the Lord your God really want from you? The Lord wants you to respect him and do what he says. God wants you to love him and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.


“You must respect the Lord your God and worship only him. Never leave him. When you make promises, you must use only his name.


You must follow the Lord your God! Respect him. Obey the Lord’s commands, and do what he tells you. Serve the Lord, and never leave him!


Also, you must kill that prophet or person that explains dreams. Why? Because he told you to turn against the Lord your God. And it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you were slaves. That person tried to pull you away from the life the Lord your God commanded you to live. So you must kill that person to remove that evil from your people.


“You must not use the name of the Lord your God in a wrong way. If a person uses the Lord’s name in a wrong way, then that person is guilty. And the Lord will not make him innocent.


I only wanted to change their way of thinking—I wanted them to respect me and obey all my commands from the heart! Then everything would be fine with them and with their descendants [33] forever.


You and your descendants [34] must respect the Lord your God as long as you live. You must obey all his laws and commands that I give you. If you do this, then you will have a long life in that new land.


So now, I want you to make a promise to me. I was kind to you and helped you. So promise before the Lord that you will be kind to my family. Please tell me that you will do this.


There are still some people living among us that are not people of Israel. Those people worship their own gods. Don’t become friends with those people. Don’t serve or worship their gods.


Then Joshua said to the people, “Now you have heard the Lord’s words. So you must respect the Lord and truly serve him. Throw away the false gods that your ancestors worshiped. That was something that happened a long time ago on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Now you must serve only the Lord.


But David answered, “Your father knows very well that I am your friend. Your father said to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know about it. If he knows, he will tell David.’ But as sure as you and the Lord are alive, I am very close to death!”


Samuel told the people of Israel, “If you are really coming back to the Lord—with all your heart—then you must throw away your foreign gods. You must throw away your idols of Ashtoreth. [83] And you must give yourselves fully to the Lord. You must serve only the Lord! Then the Lord will save you from the Philistines.”
