My soul, relax!\par The Lord is caring for you.\par


I wandered away like a lost sheep.\par Come looking for me, Lord.\par I am your servant,\par and I have not forgotten your commands.\par


He lets me lie down in green pastures.\par He leads me by calm pools of water.\par


God, you are a hiding place for me.\par You protect me from my troubles.\par You surround me and protect me.\par So I sing about the way you saved me.\par \i (SELAH {\cf2\super [201]})\i0 \par


Master, you have been our home\par forever and ever.\par


You can go to God Most-High to hide.\par You can go to the God All-Powerful\par for protection.\par


A cow knows its master.\par And a donkey knows the place where its owner feeds it.\par But the people of Israel don’t know me.\par My people don’t understand.”\par


The Lord my Master, the Holy One of Israel, says, “If you come back to me you will be saved. The only strength you have will come if you trust me. But you must be calm.”


\{If this would happen\}, then the king {\cf2\super [294]} would be like a place to hide from the wind and rain. It would be like having streams of water in a dry land. It would be like a cool shadow from a large rock in a hot land.


But \{even after he did this,\} all of us wandered away like sheep. We all went our own way. \{We did this after\} the Lord \{freed us from our guilt and\} put all our guilt on him.


The shepherds (leaders) are stupid.\par They don’t try to find the Lord.\par They are not wise,\par so their flocks (people) are scattered and lost.\par


Honor the Lord your God.\par Praise him or he will bring darkness.\par Praise him before you fall on the dark hills.\par You people of Judah are hoping for light.\par But the Lord will turn the light into thick darkness.\par The Lord will change the light into a very thick darkness.\par


“Judah, a long time ago you threw off\par your yoke.\par You broke the ropes\par \{that I used to control you\}.\par You said to me,\par ‘I will not serve you!’\par You were like a prostitute\par on every high hill\par and under every green tree. {\cf2\super [11]} \par


A young woman doesn’t forget her jewelry.\par A bride doesn’t forget the sash for her dress.\par But my people have forgotten me\par too many times to count.\par


“It will be very bad for the shepherds (leaders) of the people of Judah. Those shepherds are destroying the sheep. They are making the sheep run from my pasture in all directions.” This message is from the Lord.


It was foolish to worship idols on the hills.\par All the loud parties on the mountains\par were wrong.\par Surely the salvation of Israel\par comes from the Lord our God.\par


The Lord spoke to me during the time King Josiah was ruling the nation of Judah. The Lord said: “Jeremiah, you saw the bad things that Israel {\cf2\super [15]} did? You saw how she was unfaithful to me. She did the sin of adultery with idols on every hill and under every green tree.


The Lord All-Powerful says, “This place is empty now. There are no people or animals living here. But there will be people in all the towns of Judah. There will be shepherds, and there will be pastures where they will let their flocks rest.


“Israel is like a flock of sheep\par that were scattered all over the country.\par Israel is like sheep that were chased away\par by lions.\par The first lion to attack\par was the king of Assyria.\par The last lion to crush his bones\par was Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.\par


“I will bring Israel back to his own fields.\par He will eat food that grows\par on Mount Carmel\par and in the land of Bashan.\par He will eat and be full.\par He will eat on the hills\par in the lands of Ephraim and Gilead.”\par


“Again and again those false prophets lied to my people. The prophets said there would be peace. And there is no peace. The people need to fix the walls and prepare for war. But they only slap a thin coat of plaster {\cf2\super [109]} over the broken walls.


I will lead them to grassy fields. They will go to the place high on the mountains of Israel. There they will lie down on good ground and eat the grass. They will eat in rich grassland on the mountains of Israel.


Yes, I will feed my flock and I will lead them to a place of rest.” The Lord my Master said those things.


“I will search for the lost sheep. I will bring back the sheep that were scattered. I will put bandages on the sheep that were hurt. I will make the weak sheep strong. But I will destroy those fat and powerful \{shepherds\}. I will feed them the punishment they deserve.”


But go to the people of Israel (the Jews). They are like sheep that are lost.


Jesus said, “God sent me only to the lost people {\cf2\super [213]} of Israel (the Jews).”


Jesus saw the many people and felt sorry for them. Jesus felt sorry for the people because the people were worried and helpless. The people were like sheep without a shepherd to lead them.


You were like sheep that went the wrong way. But now you have come back to the Shepherd and Protector of your lives.
