God heals their broken hearts\par and bandages their wounds.\par


Help the king judge your people fairly.\par Help him make wise decisions for your poor people.\par


\{God says,\} “Why should I continue to punish you people? \{I punished you, but you did not change.\} You continue to rebel against me. Now every head and every heart is sick.


\{Assyria {\cf2\super [119]} thinks he is great.\} But the Lord All-Powerful will send a terrible disease against Assyria. Assyria will lose his wealth and power like a sick man loses weight. Then Assyria’s glory will be destroyed. It will be like a fire burning until everything is gone.


The Lord will lead his people\par like a shepherd leads sheep.\par The Lord will use his arm (power)\par and gather his sheep together.\par The Lord will pick up the little sheep\par and hold them in his arms.\par Their mothers will walk beside him.\par


“Those people hurt you.\par But I will force those people\par to eat their own bodies.\par Their own blood will be\par the wine that makes them drunk.\par Then every person will know that\par the Lord saved you.\par All people will know that\par the Powerful One of Jacob saved you.”\par


\{God will make the people of Israel leave their country; the land will be empty.\} Sheep will go any place they want. Lambs will walk on the land that rich people once owned.


Lord, correct us!\par But be fair!\par Don’t punish us in anger!\par


So, this is what the Lord All-Powerful says\par about the prophets:\par “I will punish those prophets.\par The punishment will be\par like eating poisoned food and water.\par The prophets started a spiritual sickness.\par And that sickness spread through\par the whole country.\par So I will punish those prophets.\par That sickness came from the prophets\par in Jerusalem.”\par


This message is from the Lord,\par “The time is coming,”\par “when I will raise up a good ‘sprout.’ {\cf2\super [181]} \par He will be a king\par who will rule in a wise way.\par He will do what is fair and right\par in the land.\par


Remember, I will bring Israel\par from that country in the north.\par I will gather the people of Israel\par from the faraway places on earth.\par Some of the people will be blind and crippled.\par Some of the women will be pregnant\par and ready to give birth.\par But many, many people will come back.\par


“Babylon, you are excited and happy.\par You took my land.\par You dance around like a young cow\par that got into the grain.\par Your laughter is like the happy sounds\par that horses make.\par


“My people have been like lost sheep.\par Their shepherds (leaders)\par led them the wrong way,\par Their leaders made them wander around\par in the mountains and hills.\par They forgot where their resting place is.\par


So the Lord All-Powerful,\par the God of Israel, says,\par “I will soon make the people of Judah\par eat bitter food.\par I will make them drink poisoned water.\par


I will bring you out of these other nations. I scattered you among these nations. But I will gather you together and bring you back from these countries. But I will raise my powerful arm and punish you. I will show my anger against you!


Use the best animals in the flock.\par Pile the wood under the pot.\par And boil the pieces of meat.\par Boil the soup until even the bones\par are cooked!’\par


The Lord my Master says, “I, myself, will be their Shepherd. I will search for my sheep. I will look out for them.


You have not made the weak strong. You have not cared for the sick sheep. You have not put bandages on the sheep that were hurt. Some of the sheep wandered away, and you did not go get them and bring them back. You did not go to look for those lost sheep. No, you were cruel and severe—that’s the way you tried to lead the sheep!


You will eat the meat from the bodies of powerful soldiers. You will drink the blood from world leaders. They will be like rams, lambs, goats and fat bulls from Bashan.


So the Lord {\cf2\super [61]} will give up his people\par until the woman gives birth to her child,\par \{the promised king\}.\par Then the rest of his brothers\par will come back to the people of Israel.\par


So rule your people with your rod.\par Rule the flock of people\par that belongs to you.\par That flock lives alone in the woods,\par and up on Mount Carmel.\par That flock lives in Bashan and Gilead\par like they did in time past.\par


At that time, I will punish the people\par that hurt you.\par I will save my hurt people.\par I will bring back the people\par that were forced to run away.\par And I will make them famous.\par People everywhere will praise them.\par


The Lord says, “I am very angry at the shepherds (leaders). I made those leaders responsible for what happens to my sheep (people).” (The people of Judah are God’s flock. And the Lord All-Powerful really does take care of his flock. He cares for them like a soldier cares for his beautiful war horse.)


Jesus said, “God sent me only to the lost people {\cf2\super [213]} of Israel (the Jews).”


Jesus heard this, and he said to them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor. It is the sick people that need a doctor. I did not come to invite good people. I came to invite sinners.”


The Son of Man {\cf2\super [299]} came to find lost people and save them.”


“But Jeshurun [212] became fat and kicked {like a bull}. (Yes, you people were fed well! You became full and fat!) Then he left the God who made him! He ran away from the Rock who saved him.
