"You shall not worshipthem or servethem; for I, the LORDyour God,am a jealousGod,visitingthe iniquityof the fatherson the children,on the thirdand the fourthgenerations of those who hateMe,
Now there was a faminein the daysof Davidfor threeyears,yearafteryear;and Davidsoughtthe presenceof the LORD.And the LORDsaid,"It is for Sauland his bloodyhouse,becausehe putthe Gibeonitesto death."
let sevenmenfrom his sonsbe givento us, and we will hangthem before the LORDin Gibeahof Saul,the chosenof the LORD."And the kingsaid,"I will give[them]."
He said,"I have beenveryzealousfor the LORD,the Godof hosts;for the sonsof Israelhave forsakenYour covenant,torndownYour altarsand killedYour prophetswith the sword.And I aloneam left;and they seekmy life,to takeit away."
"Do you seehowAhabhas humbledhimself beforeMe? Becausehe has humbledhimself beforeMe, I will not bringthe evilin his days,[but] I will bringthe evilupon his housein his son'sdays."
with whom the LORDmadea covenantand commandedthem, saying,"You shall not fearothergods,norbowdownyourselves to them norservethem norsacrificeto them.
So while thesenationsfearedthe LORD,they also servedtheir idols;their childrenlikewiseand their grandchildren,as their fathersdid,so they doto thisday.
However,the LORDdid not turnfrom the fiercenessof His greatwrathwith whichHis angerburnedagainst Judah,becauseof allthe provocationswith whichManassehhad provokedHim.
"In thismattermay the LORDpardonyour servant:when my mastergoesinto the houseof Rimmonto worshipthere,and he leanson my handand I bowmyself in the houseof Rimmon,when I bowmyself in the houseof Rimmon,the LORDpardonyour servantin thismatter."
"Therefore, the leprosyof Naamanshall clingto you and to your descendantsforever."So he wentout from his presencea leper[as white] as snow.
Now afterAmaziahcamefrom slaughteringthe Edomites,he broughtthe godsof the sonsof Seir,setthem up as his gods,boweddownbeforethem and burnedincenseto them.
"But ifyou turnawayand forsakeMy statutesand My commandmentswhichI have setbeforeyou, and goand serveothergodsand worshipthem,
"[You say], 'Godstoresawaya man's iniquityfor his sons.'Let God repayhim so that he may know[it].
"His sonsare farfrom safety,They are even oppressedin the gate,And thereis nodeliverer.
Let the iniquityof his fathersbe rememberedbeforethe LORD,And do not let the sinof his motherbe blottedout.
For they provokedHim with their highplacesAnd aroused His jealousywith their gravenimages.
Do not rememberthe iniquitiesof [our] forefathersagainst us; Let Your compassioncomequicklyto meetus, For we are broughtverylow.
"Those who hatethe LORDwould pretendobedienceto Him, And their time[of punishment] would be forever.
"You shall not worshiptheir gods,norservethem, nordoaccording to their deeds;but you shall utterlyoverthrowthem and breaktheir [sacred] pillarsin pieces.
for you shall not worshipanyothergod,for the LORD,whose nameis Jealous,is a jealousGod--
"But he who sinsagainst me injureshimself;Allthose who hateme lovedeath."
Then it becomes[something] for a manto burn,so he takesone of them and warmshimself; he alsomakesa fireto bakebread.He alsomakesa godand worshipsit; he makesit a gravenimageand fallsdownbefore it.
Noone recalls,noris there knowledgeor understandingto say,"I have burnedhalfof it in the fireand alsohave bakedbreadoverits coals.I roastmeatand eat[it]. Then I makethe restof it into an abomination,I falldownbefore a blockof wood!"
"ThereforeI will yetcontendwith you," declaresthe LORD,"And with your sons'sonsI will contend.
who showslovingkindnessto thousands,but repaysthe iniquityof fathersinto the bosomof their childrenafterthem, O greatand mightyGod.The LORDof hostsis His name;
"Yet you say,Whyshould the sonnot bearthe punishmentfor the father'siniquity?'When the sonhas practicedjusticeand righteousnessand has observedallMy statutesand donethem, he shall surelylive.
"Whatdo you mean by usingthisproverbconcerningthe landof Israel,saying,The fatherseatthe sourgrapes,But the children'steethare seton edge'?
"I saidto them, 'Castaway,eachof you, the detestablethingsof his eyes,and do not defileyourselves with the idolsof Egypt;I am the LORDyour God.'
Thereforethussaysthe LordGOD,"NowI will restorethe fortunesof Jacoband havemercyon the wholehouseof Israel;and I will be jealousfor My holyname.
He stretchedout the formof a handand caughtme by a lockof my head;and the Spiritliftedme up betweenearthand heavenand broughtme in the visionsof Godto Jerusalem,to the entranceof the northgateof the inner[court], wherethe seatof the idolof jealousy,whichprovokesto jealousy,was [located].
The LordgaveJehoiakimkingof Judahinto his hand,along with someof the vesselsof the houseof God;and he broughtthem to the landof Shinar,to the houseof his god,and he broughtthe vesselsinto the treasuryof his god.
"But [even] if[He does] not, let it be knownto you, O king,that we are not going to serveyour godsor worshipthe goldenimagethat you have setup."
then I Myselfwill setMy faceagainst that manand against his family,and I will cutofffrom amongtheir peopleboth him and allthose who playthe harlotafterhim, by playingthe harlotafterMolech.
You shall not makefor yourselves idols,norshall you setup for yourselves an imageor a [sacred] pillar,norshall you placea figuredstonein your landto bowdownto it; for I am the LORDyour God.
Further, you will eatthe fleshof your sonsand the fleshof your daughtersyou will eat.
A jealousand avengingGodis the LORD;The LORDis avengingand wrathful.The LORDtakesvengeanceon His adversaries,And He reserveswrathfor His enemies.
The LORDis slowto angerand abundantin lovingkindness,forgivinginiquityand transgression;but He will by nomeansclear[the guilty], visitingthe iniquityof the fatherson the childrento the thirdand the fourth[generations].'
Your sonsshall be shepherdsfor fortyyearsin the wilderness,and they will suffer[for] your unfaithfulness,untilyour corpsesliein the wilderness.
"Phinehasthe sonof Eleazar,the sonof Aaronthe priest,has turnedawayMy wrathfrom the sonsof Israelin that he was jealouswith My jealousyamongthem, so that I did not destroythe sonsof Israelin My jealousy.
and he saidto Him, "Allthese thingsI will giveYou, ifYou fall downand worshipme."
"Ifthe worldhatesyou, you knowthat it has hatedMe before[it hated] you.
"The worldcannothateyou, but it hatesMe becauseI testifyof it, that its deedsare evil.
And His disciplesaskedHim, "Rabbi,whosinned,this manorhis parents,that he would be bornblind?"
slanderers,haters of God,insolent,arrogant,boastful,inventorsof evil,disobedientto parents,
becausethe mind seton the fleshis hostiletowardGod;for it does not subjectitself to the lawof God,for it is not evenable[to do so],
Ordo we provokethe Lordto jealousy?We are not strongerthan He, are we?
They have madeMe jealouswith [what] is not God;They have provokedMe to angerwith their idols.So I will make them jealouswith [those who] are not a people;I will provokethem to angerwith a foolishnation,
IfI sharpenMy flashingsword,And My handtakesholdon justice,I will rendervengeanceon My adversaries,And I will repaythose who hateMe.
"For the LORDyour Godis a consumingfire,a jealousGod.
but showinglovingkindnessto thousands,to those who loveMe and keepMy commandments.
You shall not worshipthem or servethem; for I, the LORDyour God,am a jealousGod,visitingthe iniquityof the fatherson the children,and on the thirdand the fourth[generations] of those who hateMe,
for the LORDyour Godin the midstof you is a jealousGod;otherwisethe angerof the LORDyour Godwill be kindledagainst you, and He will wipeyou offthe faceof the earth.
but repaysthose who hateHim to their faces,to destroythem; He will not delaywith him who hatesHim, He will repayhim to his face.
You adulteresses,do you not knowthat friendshipwith the worldis hostilitytoward God?Thereforewhoeverwishesto be a friendof the worldmakeshimself an enemyof God.
"When you transgressthe covenantof the LORDyour God,whichHe commandedyou, and goand serveothergodsand bowdownto them, then the angerof the LORDwill burnagainst you, and you will perishquicklyfrom offthe goodlandwhichHe has givenyou."
sothat you will not associatewith thesenations,thesewhich remainamongyou, or mentionthe nameof their gods,or make [anyone] swear[by them], or servethem, or bowdownto them.
Then Joshuasaidto the people,"You will not be ableto servethe LORD,for He is a holyGod.He is a jealousGod;He will not forgiveyour transgressionor your sins.
But it cameabout when the judgedied,that they would turnbackand actmorecorruptlythantheir fathers,in followingothergodsto servethem and bowdownto them; they did not abandontheir practicesor their stubbornways.
