ThoughEdomsays,"We have been beatendown,but we will returnand buildup the ruins";thussaysthe LORDof hosts,"They may build,but I will teardown;and [men] will callthem the wickedterritory,and the peopletoward whomthe LORDis indignantforever."
"Behold,He tearsdown,and it cannotbe rebuilt;He imprisonsa man,and there can be norelease.
When He keepsquiet,whothen can condemn?And when He hidesHis face,whothen can beholdHim, That is, in regardto bothnationand man?--
"Wisein heartand mightyin strength,Whohas defiedHim withoutharm?
Unlessthe LORDbuildsthe house,They laborin vainwho buildit; Unlessthe LORDguardsthe city,The watchmankeepsawakein vain.
Remember,O LORD,against the sonsof EdomThe dayof Jerusalem,Who said,"Razeit, razeit To its very foundation."
The LORDnullifiesthe counselof the nations;He frustratesthe plansof the peoples.
Thereis nowisdomand nounderstandingAnd nocounselagainstthe LORD.
Nothing[remains] but to crouchamongthe captivesOr fallamongthe slain.In [spite of] allthis,His angerdoes not turnawayAnd His handis stillstretchedout.
They will swoopdownon the slopesof the Philistineson the west;Togetherthey will plunderthe sonsof the east;They will possessEdomand Moab,And the sonsof Ammonwill be subjectto them.
It will not be quenchednightor day;Its smokewill goup forever.From generationto generationit will be desolate;Nonewill passthrough it foreverand ever.
For My swordis satiatedin heaven,Beholdit shall descendfor judgmentupon EdomAnd upon the peoplewhom I have devotedto destruction.
"Thereis hopefor your future,"declaresthe LORD,"And [your] childrenwill returnto their own territory.
Thereforehearthe planof the LORDwhichHe has plannedagainstEdom,and His purposeswhichHe has purposedagainstthe inhabitantsof Teman:surelythey will dragthem off,[even] the littleonesof the flock;surelyHe will maketheir pasturedesolatebecauseof them.
Concerning Edom.Thussaysthe LORDof hosts,"Is therenolongeranywisdomin Teman?Has good counselbeenlostto the prudent?Has their wisdomdecayed?
"Fleeaway, turnback,dwellin the depths,O inhabitantsof Dedan,For I will bringthe disasterof Esauupon him At the timeI punishhim.
"They will devouryour harvestand your food;They will devouryour sonsand your daughters;They will devouryour flocksand your herds;They will devouryour vinesand your figtrees;They will demolishwith the swordyour fortifiedcitiesin whichyou trust.
Whois therewho speaksand it comesto pass,Unlessthe Lordhas commanded[it]?
"You will fallby the sword.I will judgeyou to the borderof Israel;so you shall knowthat I am the LORD.
thereforethussaysthe LordGOD,"I will also stretchout My handagainstEdomand cutoffmanand beastfrom it. And I will layit waste;from Temaneven to Dedanthey will fallby the sword.
"I will layMy vengeanceon Edomby the handof My peopleIsrael.Therefore, they will actin Edomaccording to My angerand according to My wrath;thus they will knowMy vengeance,"declaresthe LordGOD.
"I will makeyou a barerock;you will be a placefor the spreadingof nets.You will be builtnomore,for I the LORDhave spoken,"declaresthe LordGOD.
"I will laywasteyour citiesAnd you will becomea desolation.Then you will knowthat I am the LORD.
"I will makeyou an everlastingdesolationand your citieswill not be inhabited.Then you will knowthat I am the LORD.
Thussaysthe LORD,"For threetransgressionsof Edomand for fourI will not revokeits [punishment], Becausehe pursuedhis brotherwith the sword,While he stifledhis compassion;His angeralso torecontinually,And he maintainedhis furyforever.
"I will also smitethe winterhousetogetherwith the summerhouse;The housesof ivorywill also perishAnd the greathouseswill cometo an end,"Declaresthe LORD.
Thereforebecauseyou imposeheavyrenton the poorAnd exacta tributeof grainfrom them, [Though] you have builthousesof well-hewnstone,Yet you will not livein them; You have plantedpleasantvineyards,yet you will not drinktheir wine.
For behold,the LORDis going to commandthat the greathousebe smashedto piecesand the smallhouseto fragments.
Gooverto Calnehand look,And gofrom thereto Hamaththe great,Then godownto Gathof the Philistines.Are they betterthanthesekingdoms,Oris their territorygreaterthanyours?
The visionof Obadiah.Thussaysthe LordGODconcerning Edom--We have hearda reportfrom the LORD,And an envoyhas been sentamong the nations[saying], "Ariseand let us goagainsther for battle"--
"Becauseof violenceto your brotherJacob,You will be covered[with] shame,And you will be cutoffforever.
but I have hatedEsau,and I have madehis mountainsa desolationand [appointed] his inheritancefor the jackalsof the wilderness."
