You said, ‘The Lord is slow to become angry. The Lord is full of great love. The Lord forgives [184] people who are guilty and break the law. But the Lord always punishes people who are guilty. The Lord punishes those people, and he also punishes their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren for those bad things!’ [185]

They refused to listen.\par They forgot the amazing things you did with them!\par They became stubborn.\par They decided to return to Egypt\par and became slaves again!\par


But you say,\par ‘God punishes a child\par for his father’s sins.’\par No! Let God punish the evil person himself.\par Then that evil person will know\par he is being punished for his own sins!\par


The Lord is compassionate and merciful.\par God is patient and full of love.\par


Lord, your love is higher\par than the skies.\par Your faithfulness is higher\par than the highest clouds.\par


I hope the Lord is reminded of the sins\par of my enemy’s father.\par And I hope his mother’s sins\par are never erased.\par


The Lord is kind and merciful.\par The Lord is patient and full of love.\par


But God was merciful.\par He forgave them for their sins.\par And he did not destroy them.\par Many times God controlled his anger.\par He didn‘t let himself become too angry.\par


Master, you are a kind and merciful God.\par You are patient, loyal, and full of love.\par


Don’t worship or serve idols of any kind. Why? Because I, the Lord, am your God. I hate my people worshiping other gods. [125] People who sin against me become my enemies. And I will punish those people. And I will punish their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren.


But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations! [126]


Those shepherds (leaders) are responsible for my people. And the Lord, the God of Israel, says these things to those shepherds: “You shepherds (leaders) have made my sheep run away in all directions. You have forced them to go away. And you have not taken care of them. But I will take care of you—I will punish you for the bad things you did.” This message is from the Lord:


Lord, you are loyal and kind to thousands of people. But you also bring punishment to children for their fathers’ sins. Great and powerful God, your name is the Lord All-Powerful.


Our ancestors sinned against you.\par Now they are dead.\par Now we are suffering because of their sins.\par


Jonah complained to the Lord and said, “I knew this would happen! I was in my own country, and you told me to come here. At that time, I knew that you would forgive the people of this evil city. So I decided to run away to Tarshish. I knew that you are a kind God! I knew that you show mercy and don’t want to punish people! I knew that you are full of kindness! I knew that if these people stopped sinning, you would change your plans to destroy them.


There is no God like you.\par You take away people’s guilt.\par


“So now, Master, show your strength! Show it the way you said you would!


God saw no wrong in Jacob’s people. God saw no sin in the people of Israel. The Lord is their God, and he is with them. The Great King is with them!


Sin once used death to rule us. But God gave people more of his grace so that grace could rule by making people right with him. This brings life forever through Jesus Christ our Lord.


But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations! [27]

But the Lord punishes people who hate him. He will destroy them. He will not be slow to punish people who hate him.


“So remember that the Lord your God is the only God, and you can trust him! He keeps his Agreement. He shows his love and kindness to all people who love him and obey his commands. He continues to show his love and kindness through a thousand generations.
