The Lord shows his kindness to thousands {of generations}. The Lord forgives [340] people for the wrong things they do. But the Lord does not forget to punish guilty people. The Lord will punish not only the guilty people, but their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren will suffer for the bad things those people do. [341] ”

My son, don’t forget my teaching. Remember the things I tell you to do.

Lord, you are loyal and kind to thousands of people. But you also bring punishment to children for their fathers’ sins. Great and powerful God, your name is the Lord All-Powerful.

I prayed to the Lord my God. I told him about all of my sins. I said: “Lord, you are a great and awesome God. You keep your agreement of love and kindness with people that love you. You keep your agreement with the people who obey your commands.

You said, ‘The Lord is slow to become angry. The Lord is full of great love. The Lord forgives [184] people who are guilty and break the law. But the Lord always punishes people who are guilty. The Lord punishes those people, and he also punishes their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren for those bad things!’ [185]

“If you love me, then you will do the things I command.

If a person knows my commands and obeys those commands, then that person truly loves me. And my Father will love the person that loves me. And I will love that person. I will show myself to him.”

This promise is for you. It is also for your children and for the people that are far away. It is for every person that the Lord our God calls to himself.”

“The Lord loved your ancestors. [20] That is why he chose you, their descendants. [21] And that is why the Lord brought you out of Egypt. He was with you and brought you out with his great power.

I only wanted to change their way of thinking—I wanted them to respect me and obey all my commands from the heart! Then everything would be fine with them and with their descendants [33] forever.

“So remember that the Lord your God is the only God, and you can trust him! He keeps his Agreement. He shows his love and kindness to all people who love him and obey his commands. He continues to show his love and kindness through a thousand generations.

What great blessings there are for the person who is tempted and still continues strong. Why? Because after he has proved his faith, God will give him the reward of life forever. God promised this to all people who love him.

We love because God first loved us.

Grace (kindness), mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from his Son, Jesus Christ. We receive these blessings through truth and love.
