Jeremiah 23:2 - Easy To Read Version

2 Those shepherds (leaders) are responsible for my people. And the Lord, the God of Israel, says these things to those shepherds: “You shepherds (leaders) have made my sheep run away in all directions. You have forced them to go away. And you have not taken care of them. But I will take care of you—I will punish you for the bad things you did.” This message is from the Lord:

So now, go down and lead the people where I tell you. My angel will go before you and lead you. When the time comes to punish the people who sinned, then they will be punished.”


The shepherds (leaders) are stupid.\par They don’t try to find the Lord.\par They are not wise,\par so their flocks (people) are scattered and lost.\par


The Lord All-Powerful said, “I will soon punish those men from Anathoth. Their young men will die in war. Their sons and daughters will die from hunger.


If you people of Judah don’t listen to the Lord,\par I will hide and cry.\par Your pride will cause me to cry.\par I will cry very hard.\par My eyes will overflow with tears.\par Why? Because the Lord’s flock {\cf2\super [111]} \par will be captured.\par


Jerusalem, look!\par The enemy is coming from the north! {\cf2\super [114]} \par Where is your flock? {\cf2\super [115]} \par God gave that beautiful flock to you.\par \{You were supposed to care for that flock.\}\par


What will you say when the Lord asks you\par to account for that flock?\par You were supposed to teach the people\par \{about God\}.\par Your leaders were supposed to lead the people.\par \{But they did not do their job!\}\par So you will have much pain and troubles.\par You will be like a woman having\par a baby.\par


But I am the Lord,\par and I can look into a person’s heart.\par I can test a person’s mind.\par I can decide what each person should have.\par I can give each person the right payment\par for the things he does.\par


Family of David, {\cf2\super [169]} \par the Lord says these things:\par ‘You must judge people fairly every day.\par Protect the victims {\cf2\super [170]} from the criminals.\par If you don’t do that,\par then I will become very angry.\par My anger will be like a fire\par that no person will be able to put out.\par This will happen because you\par have done evil things.’\par


“A prophet, or a priest, or maybe one of the people might say, ‘This is an announcement from the Lord …’ \{That person lied,\} so I will punish that person and his whole family.


Then the Lord could not be patient with you any longer. The Lord hated the terrible things you did. So the Lord made your country an empty desert. No person lives there now. Other people say bad things about that country.


Should I punish the people of Judah\par for doing these things?”\par This message is from the Lord.\par “You know that I should punish a nation\par such as this.\par I should give them the punishment\par that they deserve.”\par

They should be ashamed\par of the bad things they do.\par But they are not ashamed at all.\par They don’t know enough\par to be embarrassed of their sins.\par So they will be punished with everyone else.\par They will be thrown to the ground\par when I punish the people.”\par The Lord said those things.\par


“‘And now the sheep are scattered because there was no shepherd. They became food for every wild animal. So they were scattered.


“She served the Baals. {\cf2\super [17]} So I will punish her. She burned incense {\cf2\super [18]} to the Baals. She dressed up—she put on her jewelry and nose ring. Then she went to her lovers and forgot me.” The Lord has said this.


\{Even\} the best of them is like a thorn bush.\par Even the best of them is more crooked\par than a tangled thorn bush.\par


The Lord says, “I am very angry at the shepherds (leaders). I made those leaders responsible for what happens to my sheep (people).” (The people of Judah are God’s flock. And the Lord All-Powerful really does take care of his flock. He cares for them like a soldier cares for his beautiful war horse.)


This will show that I will get a new shepherd for this country. But this young man will not be able to take care of the sheep that are being destroyed. He will not be able to heal the hurt sheep. He will not be able to feed those that are left alive. And the healthy ones will be eaten completely—only their hoofs will be left.”


I was without clothes, and you gave me something to wear. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you came to visit me.’

The kind of religion (worship) that God accepts is this: caring for orphans {\cf2\super [2]} or widows {\cf2\super [3]} who need help, and keeping yourself free from the world’s \{evil\} influence. This is the kind of religion (worship) that God accepts as pure and good.
