Lord, it is time for you to do something.\par The people have broken your law.\par


Some people are trying to kill me.\par Disappoint them\par and make them ashamed.\par Make them turn and run away.\par Those people are planning to hurt me.\par \{Defeat them and\} embarrass them.\par


You know I am very upset.\par You know how much I have cried.\par Surely you have kept an account\par of all my tears.\par


You are the Lord God All-Powerful,\par the God of Israel!\par Get up and punish those people.\par Don’t show any mercy to those evil traitors.\par \i (SELAH {\cf2\super [348]})\i0 \par


Lawmakers, you will have to explain the things you have done. What will you do at that time? Your destruction is coming from a faraway country. Where will you run for help? Your money and your riches will not help you.


People have become worse and worse. People have become very low. God, surely you will not forgive them, will you? {\cf2\super [22]}


No person from the city of Anathoth will be left. No person will survive. I will punish them. I will cause something bad to happen to them.”


Lord, you understand me.\par Remember me and take care of me.\par People are hurting me.\par Give those people the punishment\par that they deserve.\par You are being patient with those people.\par But don’t destroy me\par while you remain patient with them.\par Think about me.\par Think about the pain I suffer for you, Lord.\par


People are hurting me.\par Make those people ashamed.\par But don’t disappoint me.\par Let those people be scared.\par But don’t scare me.\par Bring the terrible day of disaster\par to my enemies.\par Break them.\par And break them again.\par


You will lose the land I gave you.\par I will let your enemies take you\par to be their slaves.\par Why? Because I am very angry.\par My anger is like a hot fire,\par and you will be burned forever.”\par


Then the enemies of Jeremiah said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah. Surely the teaching of the law by the priest will not be lost. And the advice from the wise men will still be with us. We will still have the words of the prophets. So let us tell lies about him. That will ruin him. We will not pay attention to anything he says.”


Then the priests and the prophets spoke to the rulers and all the other people. They said, “Jeremiah should be killed. He said bad things about Jerusalem. You heard him say those things.”


Jeremiah finished speaking everything the Lord had commanded him to say to the people. Then the priests, the prophets, and all the people grabbed Jeremiah. They said, “You will die for saying such terrible things!


Those officials were very angry with Jeremiah. They gave an order for Jeremiah to be beaten. Then they put Jeremiah in a prison. The prison was in the house of a man named Jonathan. Jonathan was a scribe {\cf2\super [322]} for the king of Judah. Jonathan’s house had been made into a prison.


Then those royal officials that heard the things Jeremiah was telling the people went to King Zedekiah. They said to the king, “Jeremiah must be put to death. He is making the soldiers that are still in the city become discouraged. Jeremiah is discouraging everyone by the things he is saying. Jeremiah does not want good to happen to us. He wants to ruin the people of Jerusalem.”


The priests and prophets should\par be ashamed\par of the bad things they do.\par But they are not ashamed at all.\par They don’t know enough\par to be embarrassed of their sins.\par So they will be punished with everyone else.\par They will be thrown to the ground\par when I punish the people.”\par The Lord said those things.\par


So, this is what the Lord says:\par “I will give the people of Judah problems.\par They will be like stones\par that make people fall.\par Fathers and sons will stumble over them.\par Friends and neighbors will die.”\par


So the Lord says this: “I will show my anger against this place. I will punish people and animals. I will punish the trees in the field and the crops that grow in the ground. My anger will be like a hot fire—and no person will be able to stop it.”


They should be ashamed\par of the bad things they do.\par But they are not ashamed at all.\par They don’t know enough\par to be embarrassed of their sins.\par So they will be punished with everyone else.\par They will be thrown to the ground\par when I punish the people.”\par The Lord said those things.\par


You have seen how my enemies\par have hurt me.\par You have seen all the evil plans\par that they made against me.\par


You heard them insult me, Lord.\par You have heard all the evil plans\par that they made against me.\par


The prophets {\cf2\super [334]} wrote many things about the time when God will punish his people. The time I am telling you about is the time when all these things must happen.


But you people are hard and stubborn. You refuse to change. So you are making your own punishment greater and greater. You will get that punishment on the day when God will show his anger. On that day people will see God’s right judgments.
