One day, Jacob heard Laban’s sons talking. They said, “Jacob has taken everything that our father owned. Jacob has become rich—and he has taken all this wealth from our father.”


The men went after the Aramean army as far as the Jordan River. All along the road there were clothes and weapons. The Arameans had thrown these things down when they hurried away. The messengers went back to Samaria and told the king.


then what will I do when I must face God?\par What will I say when God asks me\par to explain what I did?\par


On the day God judges people, money is worth nothing. But goodness will save people from death.


The Lord’s special day is near. So cry and be sad for yourselves. A time is coming when the enemy will steal your wealth. God All-Powerful will make that happen. {\cf2\super [142]}


At that time, Jacob’s (Israel’s) wealth\par will all be gone.\par Jacob will be like a man who was sick\par and became weak and thin.\par


Those people living near the sea will say, “We trusted those countries to help us. We ran to them so they would rescue us from the king of Assyria. {\cf2\super [202]} But look at them. Those countries have been captured, so how will we be able to escape?”


Those dead \{lords {\cf2\super [243]} \} will not come to life.\par Those ghosts will not rise from death.\par You decided to destroy them.\par And you destroyed everything that makes us think about them.\par


The Lord will leave his place {\cf2\super [245]} \par to judge the people of the world\par for the bad things they have done.\par The earth will show the blood\par of the people that have been killed.\par The earth will not cover the dead people\par


“Then you will understand this story: A man tried to sleep on a bed that was too short for him. And he had a blanket that was not wide enough to cover him. \{The bed and blanket were useless, and so were your agreements\}.”


The Lord All-Powerful punished you with earthquakes, thunder, and loud noises. There were storms, strong winds, and fire that burned and destroyed.


You say, “No, we need horses to run away on!” That is true—you will run away on horses. But the enemy will chase you. And the enemy will be faster than your horses.


But they will be disappointed. They are depending on a nation that can’t help them. Egypt is useless—Egypt will give no help. Egypt will cause only shame and embarrassment.”


That useless nation is Egypt. Egypt’s help will be worth nothing. So I call Egypt the “Do-Nothing Dragon.”


The sinners in Zion {\cf2\super [308]} are afraid. The people that do wrong things shake with fear. They say, “Can any of us live through this fire that destroys? Who can live near this fire that burns forever?” {\cf2\super [309]}


Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him, “What did these men say? Where did they come from?”


Then \{they will die and\} Sheol, {\cf2\super [53]} \{the place of death\}, will get more and more people. That \{place of death\} will open her mouth with no limit. And all those people will go down into Sheol.”


\{Look!\} God is giving a sign to the nations in a faraway land. God is raising a flag, and he is whistling to call those people. The enemy is coming from a faraway land. The enemy will soon enter the country. They are moving very quickly.


I will send men to destroy the palace.\par Each man will have weapons\par that he will use to destroy that house.\par Those men will cut up your strong,\par beautiful cedar beams.\par Those men will throw those beams\par into the fire.”\par


Judah, you have been destroyed.\par So what are you doing now?\par Why are you putting on your best red dress?\par Why are you putting on your gold jewelry?\par Why are you putting on your eye makeup?\par You make yourself beautiful,\par but it is a waste of time.\par Your lovers hate you.\par They are trying to kill you.\par


The prophets tell lies.\par The priests will not do\par what they were chosen to do. {\cf2\super [36]} \par And my people love it this way!\par But what will you people do\par when your punishment comes?”\par


I should punish the people of Judah.”\par This message is from the Lord.\par “You know that I should punish\par that kind of people.\par I should give them the punishment\par that they deserve.”\par


Ephraim saw his sickness,\par and Judah saw his wound.\par So they went to Assyria for help.\par They told their problems to the great king.\par But that king can’t heal you.\par He can’t cure your wound.\par


They will not be able to celebrate the Lord’s holidays or festivals. {\cf2\super [88]}


The prophet says, “Israel, learn these things: The time of punishment has come. The time has come for you to pay \{for the evil things you did\}.” But the people of Israel say, “The prophet is a fool. This man with \{God’s\} Spirit is crazy.” The prophet says, “You will be punished for your bad sins. You will be punished for your hate.”


You will be like a man\par that escapes a lion\par only to be attacked by a bear!\par You will be like a man\par that goes into the safety of his house,\par leans against the wall,\par and is bitten by a snake!\par


\{Even\} the best of them is like a thorn bush.\par Even the best of them is more crooked\par than a tangled thorn bush.\par


Their gold and silver won’t help them! At that time, the Lord will become very upset and angry. The Lord will destroy the whole world! {\cf2\super [8]} The Lord will completely destroy everyone on earth! {\cf2\super [9]} ”


They will destroy you and all your people. Not one stone of your buildings will stay on top of another. All this will happen because you did not know the time when God came to save you.”


“The Lord will bring a nation from far away to fight you. You will not understand their language. They will come quickly, like an eagle coming down from the sky.


People who don’t believe are living all around you. Those people may say that you are doing wrong. So live good lives. Then they will see the good things you do, and they will give glory to God on that day when he comes.
