When the suncameup Godappointeda scorchingeastwind,and the sunbeatdownon Jonah'sheadso that he becamefaintand beggedwith [all] his soulto die,saying,"Deathis betterto me thanlife."
Then behold,sevenears,thinand scorchedby the eastwind,sproutedup afterthem.
But he himselfwenta day'sjourneyinto the wilderness,and cameand satdownundera junipertree;and he requestedfor himselfthat he might die,and said,"It is enough;now,O LORD,takemy life,for I am not betterthanmy fathers."
So Ahabcameinto his housesullenand vexedbecauseof the wordwhichNaboththe Jezreelitehad spokento him; for he said,"I will not giveyou the inheritanceof my fathers."And he laydownon his bedand turnedawayhis faceand atenofood.
But he saidto her, "You speakas oneof the foolishwomenspeaks.Shall we indeedacceptgoodfrom Godand not acceptadversity?"In allthisJobdid not sinwith his lips.
So that my soulwould choosesuffocation,Deathratherthanmy pains.
The sunwill not smiteyou by day,Northe moonby night.
"I have becomemute,I do not openmy mouth,Becauseit is You who have done[it].
Do not be eagerin your heartto be angry,For angerresidesin the bosomof fools.
"Do not stareat me because I am swarthy,For the sunhas burnedme. My mother'ssonswere angrywith me; They mademe caretakerof the vineyards,[But] I have not takencareof my own vineyard.
"They will not hungeror thirst,Norwill the scorchingheator sunstrikethem down;For He who hascompassionon them will leadthem And will guidethem to springsof water.
But it was pluckedup in fury;It was castdownto the ground;And the eastwinddriedup its fruit.Its strongbranchwas tornoffSo that it withered;The fireconsumedit.
Thoughhe flourishesamongthe reeds,An eastwindwill come,The windof the LORDcomingup from the wilderness;And his fountainwill becomedryAnd his springwill be driedup; It will plunder[his] treasuryof everypreciousarticle.
Then Mosessaidto Aaron,"It is whatthe LORDspoke,saying,By those who comenearMe I will be treatedas holy,And beforeallthe peopleI will be honored.'"So Aaron,therefore, keptsilent.
And the LORDappointeda greatfishto swallowJonah,and Jonahwas in the stomachof the fishthreedaysand threenights.
The LORDhurleda greatwindon the seaand there was a greatstormon the seaso that the shipwas about to breakup.
"Therefore now,O LORD,pleasetakemy lifefrom me, for deathis betterto me thanlife."
Then Godsaidto Jonah,"Do you have goodreasonto be angryaboutthe plant?"And he said,"I have goodreasonto be angry,even to death."
saying,'Theselast menhave worked[only] onehour,and you have madethem equalto us whohave bornethe burdenand the scorching heatof the day.'
Those whomI love,I reproveand discipline;thereforebe zealousand repent.
"They will hungernolonger,northirstanymore;norwill the sunbeat downon them, noranyheat;
So Samueltoldhim everythingand hidnothingfrom him. And he said,"It is the LORD;let Him dowhatseems goodto Him."
