Your rulers are rebels and friends of thieves. All of your rulers demand bribes—they accept money for doing wrong things. All of your rulers take pay for cheating people. Your rulers don’t try to help the children that have no parents. And your rulers don’t listen to the needs of the women whose husbands are dead.”
{\cf2\super [97]} “Why is my lover (Judah)\par in my house (temple)?\par She has no right to be there.\par She had done many evil things.\par Judah, do you think that special promises\par and animal sacrifices will stop you\par from being destroyed?\par Do you think you can escape punishment\par by offering sacrifices to me?”\par
My own people turned against me\par like a wild lion.\par They roared at me,\par so I turned away from them.\par
The Lord said to me, “Jeremiah, even if Moses and Samuel were here to pray for the people of Judah, I would not feel sorry for these people. Send the people of Judah away from me. Tell them to go.
Israel was unfaithful and Israel knew why I sent her away. Israel knew that I divorced her because she did the sin of adultery. But that did not make her unfaithful sister afraid. Judah, was not afraid. Judah also went out and acted like a prostitute.
So I will go to the leaders of Judah.\par I will talk to them.\par Surely the leaders know the way of the Lord.\par I am sure they know the law of their God.”\par But the leaders had all joined together\par to break away from serving the Lord.\par

Then \{the Lord\} said, “Name him Lo-Ammi. {\cf2\super [8]} Why? Because you are not my people. I am not your God.”
But the people in Gilead {\cf2\super [138]} have sinned. There are many terrible idols in that place. The people offer sacrifices to bulls at Gilgal. Those people have many altars. {\cf2\super [139]} There are rows and rows of altars—like the rows of dirt in a plowed field.
\{The Lord says,\} “I have an argument against Israel. {\cf2\super [128]} Jacob {\cf2\super [129]} must be punished for the things he did. He must be punished for the bad things he did.
In the same way, the people of Israel will continue many days without a king or a leader. They will be without a sacrifice or a memorial stone. {\cf2\super [29]} They will be without an ephod {\cf2\super [30]} or a household god.
“Israel, you act like a prostitute. {\cf2\super [44]} But don’t let Judah be guilty. Don’t go to Gilgal {\cf2\super [45]} or go up to Beth-aven. {\cf2\super [46]} Don’t use the Lord’s name to make promises. Don’t say, ‘As the Lord lives …!’
So the priests are no different than the people. I will punish them for the things they did. I will pay them back for the wrong things they did.
Those people don’t believe\par that I will remember their crimes.\par The bad things they did are all around.\par I can see their sins clearly.\par
Those people will not listen to my God.\par So he will refuse to listen to them.\par And they will wander among the nations\par without a home.\par
The Israelites will not stay in the Lord’s land. Ephraim will return to Egypt. In Assyria they will eat food that they should not eat.

But don’t look in Bethel. {\cf2\super [60]} \par Don’t go to Gilgal. {\cf2\super [61]} \par Don’t cross the border\par and go down to Beersheba. {\cf2\super [62]} \par The people of Gilgal will be taken away\par as prisoners. {\cf2\super [63]} \par And Bethel will be destroyed. {\cf2\super [64]} \par
The judges in Jerusalem accept bribes\par to help them decide who wins in court.\par The priests in Jerusalem must be paid\par before they will teach the people.\par People must pay the prophets\par before they will look into the future.\par And then those leaders expect the Lord\par to help them. These things really happened when Herod, {\cf2\super [76]} Pontius Pilate, the nations, and the Jewish people all ‘came together’ against Jesus here in Jerusalem. Jesus is your holy Servant. He is the One you (God) made to be the Christ. {\cf2\super [77]}
