But let that manbe like the citiesWhichthe LORDoverthrewwithoutrelenting,And let him hearan outcryin the morningAnd a shoutof alarmat noon;
May an outcrybe heardfrom their houses,WhenYou suddenlybringraidersupon them; For they have duga pitto captureme And hiddensnaresfor my feet.
if that nationagainstwhichI have spokenturnsfrom its evil,I will relentconcerningthe calamityI plannedto bringon it.
"Also among the prophetsof JerusalemI have seena horriblething:The committingof adulteryand walkingin falsehood;And they strengthenthe handsof evildoers,So that noonehas turnedbackfrom his wickedness.Allof them have becometo Me like Sodom,And her inhabitantslike Gomorrah.
"Nowtherefore amendyour waysand your deedsand obeythe voiceof the LORDyour God;and the LORDwill changeHis mindaboutthe misfortunewhichHe has pronouncedagainstyou.
My soul,my soul!I am in anguish!Oh,my heart!My heartis poundingin me; I cannotbe silent,Becauseyou have heard,O my soul,The soundof the trumpet,The alarmof war.
For the iniquityof the daughterof my peopleIs greaterthanthe sinof Sodom,Which was overthrownas in a moment,And nohandswere turnedtoward her.
"Into his righthandcamethe divination,'Jerusalem,'to setbatteringrams,to openthe mouthfor slaughter,to liftup the voicewith a battlecry,to setbatteringramsagainstthe gates,to castup ramps,to builda siegewall.
Therefore a tumultwill ariseamong your people,And allyour fortresseswill be destroyed,As ShalmandestroyedBeth-arbelon the dayof battle,[When] motherswere dashedin pieceswith [their] children.
Howcan I giveyou up, O Ephraim?How can I surrenderyou, O Israel?Howcan I makeyou like Admah?How can I treatyou like Zeboiim?My heartis turnedoverwithinMe, AllMy compassionsare kindled.
Shall I ransomthem from the powerof Sheol?Shall I redeemthem from death?O Death,whereare your thorns?O Sheol,whereis your sting?Compassionwill be hiddenfrom My sight.
"So I will kindlea fireon the wallof RabbahAnd it will consumeher citadelsAmid warcrieson the dayof battle,And a stormon the dayof tempest.
"So I will sendfireupon MoabAnd it will consumethe citadelsof Kerioth;And Moabwill dieamid tumult,With warcriesand the soundof a trumpet.
"I overthrewyou, as GodoverthrewSodomand Gomorrah,And you were like a firebrandsnatchedfrom a blaze;Yet you have not returnedto Me," declaresthe LORD.
Then Jonahbeganto gothrough the cityoneday'swalk;and he criedout and said,"Yetfortydaysand Ninevehwill be overthrown."
He prayedto the LORDand said,"PleaseLORD,was not thiswhatI saidwhileI was stillin my [own] country?Thereforein order to forestallthis I fledto Tarshish,for I knewthat You are a graciousand compassionateGod,slowto angerand abundantin lovingkindness,and one who relentsconcerningcalamity.
A dayof trumpetand battlecryAgainstthe fortifiedcitiesAnd the highcornertowers.
"Therefore,as I live,"declaresthe LORDof hosts,The Godof Israel,"SurelyMoabwill be like SodomAnd the sonsof Ammonlike Gomorrah--A placepossessedby nettlesand saltpits,And a perpetualdesolation.The remnantof My peoplewill plunderthem And the remainderof My nationwill inheritthem."
but on the daythat Lotwentout from Sodomit rainedfireand brimstonefrom heavenand destroyedthem all.
"Now the generationto come,your sonswhoriseup afteryou and the foreignerwhocomesfrom a distantland,when they seethe plaguesof the landand the diseaseswith whichthe LORDhas afflictedit, will say,
Allits landis brimstoneand salt,a burningwaste, unsownand unproductive,and nograssgrowsin it, like the overthrowof Sodomand Gomorrah,Admahand Zeboiim,whichthe LORDoverthrewin His angerand in His wrath.'
and [if] He condemnedthe citiesof Sodomand Gomorrahto destructionby reducing [them] to ashes,having madethem an exampleto those who wouldlive ungodly[lives] thereafter;
justas Sodomand Gomorrahand the citiesaroundthem, since they in the samewayas theseindulged in gross immoralityand wentafterstrangeflesh,are exhibitedas an examplein undergoingthe punishmentof eternalfire.
