The people that heard Jesus began to leave one by one. The older men left first, and then the others. Jesus was left there alone with the woman. She was standing before him.
There are things about God that people cannot see—his eternal power and all the things that make him God. But since the beginning of the world those things have been easy for people to understand. Those things are made clear in the things that God has made. So people have no excuse for the bad things they do.
Yes, the Jews have many special things. The most important thing is this: God trusted the Jews with his teachings.
No! God will continue to be true even when every person is false. Like the Scriptures {\cf2\super [26]} say:
So are we Jews better than other people? No! We have already said that Jews and non-Jews are the same. They are all guilty of sin.
But people who depend on following the law \{to make them right\} are under a curse. Why? Because the Scriptures say, “A person must do all the things that are written in the law. {\cf2\super [28]} If he does not always obey, then that person is under a curse!” {\cf2\super [29]}
Some of you people still want to be under the law \{of Moses\}. Tell me, do you know what the law says?
God did this so that he could buy the freedom of the people who were under the law. God’s purpose was to make us his children.
But if you let the Spirit lead you, then you are not under law. {\cf2\super [72]}
The Lord protects his holy people. He keeps them from stumbling. But bad people will be destroyed. They will fall in the darkness. Their power will not help them win.
