Fear is like a trap. But if you trust in the Lord, you will be safe.


The Lord says,\par “I am the One who comforts you.\par So why should you be afraid of people?\par They are only people that live and die.\par They are only humans—\par they die the same as grass.”\par


You people that understand goodness\par should listen to me.\par You people that follow my teachings\par should hear the things I say.\par Don’t be afraid of evil people.\par Don’t be afraid of the bad things\par that they say to you.\par


You did not remember me.\par You did not even notice me!\par So, who were you worrying about?\par Who were you afraid of?\par Why did you lie?\par Look, I have been quiet for a long time—\par and you did not honor me.\par


“People will hate you because you belong to the Son of Man. {\cf2\super [117]} They will make you leave their group. They will insult you. They will think it is wrong even to say your name. When these things happen, know that God will bless you.


The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites {\cf2\super [8]} to John. {\cf2\super [9]} The Jews sent them to ask, “Who are you?”


People will make you leave their synagogues. {\cf2\super [222]} Yes, a time is coming when people will think that killing you would be doing service for God.


Later, a man named Joseph from Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. (Joseph was a follower of Jesus. But he did not tell people, because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders.) Pilate said that Joseph could take the body of Jesus. So Joseph came and took Jesus’ body away.


The day was Sunday. That same evening the followers were together. The doors were locked, because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Then Jesus came and stood among them. Jesus said, “Peace be with you!”


But none of the people were brave enough to talk about Jesus openly. The people were afraid of the Jewish leaders.


The Jews still did not believe that this really happened to the man. They did not believe that this man was blind and was now healed. But later they sent for the man’s parents.


But we don’t know why he can see now. We don’t know who healed his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough to answer for himself.”


The Jewish leaders answered, “You were born full of sin! Are you trying to teach us?” And the Jewish leaders forced the man to leave.


Jesus heard that the Jewish leaders had forced the man to leave. Jesus found the man and said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of Man {\cf2\super [160]} ?”


So the Jewish leaders called Peter and John in again. They told the apostles {\cf2\super [72]} not to say anything or to teach anything in the name of Jesus.


None of the other people felt worthy to stand with them. All the people were saying good things about the apostles.


They called the apostles {\cf2\super [104]} in again. They beat the apostles and told them not to talk to people about Jesus again. Then they let the apostles go free.


But the people who are cowards, people who refuse to believe, people who do terrible things, people who kill, people who sin sexually, people who do evil magic, people who worship idols, {\cf2\super [159]} and people who tell lies—all those people will have a place in the lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
