But, God, you crushed us in this place\par where jackals {\cf2\super [268]} live.\par You left us in this place\par as dark as death.\par
The Lord said, “I will change Babylon. That place will be for animals, {\cf2\super [152]} \{not people\}. That place will be a swamp. I will use the ‘broom of destruction’ to sweep Babylon away.” The Lord All-Powerful said those things.
You have destroyed the city.\par It was a city protected by strong walls.\par But now it is only a pile of rocks.\par The foreign palace has been destroyed.\par It will never be built again.\par
People will leave the capital city. The palace and towers will be left empty. People will not live in houses—they will live in caves. Wild donkeys and sheep will live in the city—animals will go there to eat grass.
Thorns and wild bushes will grow in all the beautiful homes there. Wild dogs and owls will live in those homes. Wild animals will make their homes there. Big birds will live in the grasses that grow there.
Wild cats will live there with hyenas. {\cf2\super [323]} And wild goats {\cf2\super [324]} will call to their friends. Night animals {\cf2\super [325]} will look there and find a place to rest.
Now people see mirages {\cf2\super [331]} \{that look like water\}. But at that time there will be real pools of water. There will be wells in the dry land. Water will flow from the ground. Tall water plants will grow where wild animals once ruled.
Even the wild animals will be thankful to me. The large animals and birds will honor me. They will honor me when I put water in the desert. They will honor me when I make rivers in the dry land. I will do this to give water to my people—the people I chose.
The Lord All-Powerful,\par the God of the people of Israel, says:\par “Babylon is like a threshing floor. {\cf2\super [424]} \par At harvest time, people beat grain\par to separate the good parts from the chaff. {\cf2\super [425]} \par And the time to beat Babylon\par is coming soon.\par
“I (the Lord) will make the city of Jerusalem\par a pile of garbage.\par It will be a home for jackals. {\cf2\super [75]} \par I will destroy the cities in the land of Judah,\par so no one will live there.”\par
Even a wild dog feeds her babies.\par Even the jackal lets her pups suck\par at her breast.\par But the daughter of my people {\cf2\super [27]} is cruel.\par She is like the ostrich\par that lives in the desert.\par
I will be very sad about what will happen.\par I will go without shoes and clothes.\par I will cry like a dog. {\cf2\super [11]} \par I will mourn like a bird. {\cf2\super [12]} \par
This message is about a special time in the future. This message is about the end, and it will come true! \{It may seem like that time will never come.\} But be patient and wait for it. That time will come. It will not be late.
Then only sheep and wild animals will live in that ruined city. Owls and crows will sit on the columns that are left standing. Their calls will be heard coming through the windows. Crows will sit on the doorsteps. Black birds {\cf2\super [18]} will sit in those empty houses.
I will punish them for the bad things they did. But I am saving that punishment for when they slip and do bad things. Their time of trouble is near. Their punishment will come quickly.’
Those false teachers only want your money. So they will use you by telling you things that are not true. But the judgment against those false teachers has been ready for a long time. And they will not escape the One (God) who will destroy them.
