These are the names of David’s warriors: Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite was chief of the officers.  He wielded his spear  against eight hundred men that he killed at one time.


They received help against these enemies because they cried out to God in battle, and the Hagrites and all their allies were handed over to them.  He was receptive to their prayer because they trusted in him.


Many of the Hagrites were killed because it was God’s battle.  And they lived there in the Hagrites’ place  until the exile.


The Lord will fight for you, and you must be quiet.’


One thousand will flee at the threat of one, at the threat of five you will flee, until you remain like a solitary pole on a mountaintop or a banner on a hill.


You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword.


Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand; your enemies will fall before you by the sword.


On that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem,  so that on that day the one who is weakest among them will be like David on that day, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the Lord, before them.


What, then, are we to say about these things?  If God is for us, who is against us?


He is to say to them, “Listen, Israel: Today you are about to engage in battle with your enemies. Do not be cowardly. Do not be afraid, alarmed, or terrified because of them.


For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you  against your enemies to give you victory.”


‘The Lord will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you. They will march out against you from one direction but flee from you in seven directions.


Don’t be afraid of them, for the Lord your God fights for you.


He said, ‘I will hide my face from them; I will see what will become of them, for they are a perverse generation – unfaithful children.


How could one pursue a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the  Lord had given them up?


Joshua captured all these kings and their land in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.


So diligently watch yourselves! Love the Lord your God!


and you have seen for yourselves everything the Lord your God did to all these nations on your account, because it was the Lord your God who was fighting for you.
