Isaiah 64

¹ If you would tear open the skies\par and come down to earth,\par \{then everything would change\}.\par The mountains would melt before you.\par

² \{The mountains\} would burst into flames\par like burning bushes.\par \{The mountains would boil like\}\par water on the fire.\par Then your enemies would learn about you.\par Then all nations would shake with fear\par when they see you.\par

³ But we don’t really want\par you to do these things.\par The mountains would melt before you.\par

⁴ Your people never really listened to you.\par Your people never really heard\par the things you said.\par No person has ever seen a God like you.\par There is no other God—only you.\par If people are patient\par and wait for you to help them,\par then you will do great things for them.\par

⁵ You are with people that enjoy doing good.\par Those people remember you by living the way you want them to.\par But in the past we sinned against you.\par So you became angry at us.\par Now, how will we be saved?\par

⁶ We are all dirty with sin.\par Even our good works \{are not pure\}.\par They are like blood-stained rags.\par We are all like dead leaves.\par Our sins have carried us away like wind.\par

⁷ We don’t worship you.\par We don’t trust in your name.\par We aren’t excited about following you.\par So you have turned away from us.\par We are helpless before you,\par because we are full of sin.\par

⁸ But Lord, you are our father.\par We are like clay.\par And you are the potter. {\cf2\super [464]} \par Your hands made us all.\par

⁹ Lord, don’t continue to be angry with us!\par Don’t remember our sins forever!\par Please, look at us!\par We are your people.\par

¹⁰ Your holy cities are empty.\par Those cities are like deserts now.\par Zion {\cf2\super [465]} is a desert!\par Jerusalem is destroyed!\par

¹¹ Our ancestors worshiped you in\par our holy temple.\par Our temple was so wonderful,\par but now it has been burned in the fire!\par All our precious possessions\par have been destroyed.\par

¹² Will these things always keep you from \{showing your love to us\}?\par Will you continue to say nothing?\par Will you punish us forever?\par
