Then Samueltookthe flaskof oil,pouredit on his head,kissedhim and said,"Has not the LORDanointedyou a ruleroverHis inheritance?
Then Davidsaidto him, "Howis it you were not afraidto stretchout your handto destroythe LORD'Sanointed?"
Allthe peoplecrossedoverthe Jordanand the kingcrossedtoo. The kingthen kissedBarzillaiand blessedhim, and he returnedto his place.
"I am of those who are peaceable[and] faithfulin Israel.You are seekingto destroya city,even a motherin Israel.Whywould you swallowup the inheritanceof the LORD?"
"Previously,when Saulwas kingoverus, you were the one who ledIsraelout and in. And the LORDsaidto you, 'You will shepherdMy peopleIsrael,and you will be a ruleroverIsrael.'"
"Let Zadokthe priestand Nathanthe prophetanointhim thereas kingoverIsrael,and blowthe trumpetand say,[Long] liveKingSolomon!'
"Yet I will leave7000in Israel,allthe kneesthat have not bowedto Baaland everymouththat has not kissedhim."
"Returnand sayto Hezekiahthe leaderof My people,'Thussaysthe LORD,the Godof your fatherDavid,"I have heardyour prayer,I have seenyour tears;behold,I will healyou. On the thirddayyou shall goup to the houseof the LORD.
Now Elishathe prophetcalledoneof the sonsof the prophetsand saidto him, "Girdup your loins,and takethisflaskof oilin your handand goto Ramoth-gilead.
They said,"It is a lie,tellus now."And he said,"Thusand thushe saidto me, 'Thussaysthe LORD,"I have anointedyou kingoverIsrael."'"
For the LORDhas chosenJacobfor Himself, Israelfor His own possession.
Dohomageto the Son,that He not becomeangry,and you perish[in] the way,For His wrathmay soonbe kindled.How blessedare allwho takerefugein Him!
From the careof the eweswith sucklinglambsHe broughthim To shepherdJacobHis people,And IsraelHis inheritance.
"Takealso for yourself the finestof spices:of flowingmyrrhfivehundred[shekels], and of fragrantcinnamonhalfas much,two hundredand fifty,and of fragrantcanetwo hundredand fifty,
The portionof Jacobis not like these;For the Makerof allis He, And Israelis the tribeof His inheritance;The LORDof hostsis His name.
"Thus you were adornedwith goldand silver,and your dresswas of finelinen,silkand embroideredcloth.You atefineflour,honeyand oil;so you were exceedinglybeautifuland advancedto royalty.
And nowthey sinmoreand more,And makefor themselves moltenimages,Idolsskillfullymade from their silver,Allof them the workof craftsmen.They sayof them, "Let the menwho sacrificekissthe calves!"
"Thenthey askedfor a king,and Godgavethem Saulthe sonof Kish,a manof the tribeof Benjamin,for fortyyears.
"For the LORD'Sportionis His people;Jacobis the allotmentof His inheritance.
Greetallthe brethrenwith a holykiss.
For it was fittingfor Him, for whomare allthings,and throughwhomare all things,in bringingmanysonsto glory,to perfectthe authorof their salvationthroughsufferings.
WhenHe had takenthe book,the fourliving creaturesand the twenty-foureldersfell downbeforethe Lamb,each oneholdinga harpand goldenbowlsfullof incense,whichare the prayersof the saints.
"HereI am; bearwitnessagainst me beforethe LORDand His anointed.Whoseoxhave I taken,or whosedonkeyhave I taken,or whomhave I defrauded?Whomhave I oppressed,or from whosehandhave I takena bribeto blindmy eyeswith it? I will restore[it] to you."
"But nowyour kingdomshall not endure.The LORDhas soughtout for Himself a manafter His own heart,and the LORDhas appointedhim as ruleroverHis people,becauseyou have not keptwhatthe LORDcommandedyou."
Then Samuelsaidto Saul,"The LORDsentme to anointyou as kingoverHis people,overIsrael;nowtherefore, listento the wordsof the LORD.
Samuelsaid,"Is it not true, thoughyou were littlein your own eyes,you were [made] the headof the tribesof Israel?And the LORDanointedyou kingoverIsrael,
Now the LORDsaidto Samuel,"Howlongwill you grieveoverSaul,since I have rejectedhim from beingkingoverIsrael?Fillyour hornwith oiland go;I will sendyou to Jessethe Bethlehemite,for I have selecteda kingfor Myself among his sons."
Then Samueltookthe hornof oiland anointedhim in the midstof his brothers;and the Spiritof the LORDcamemightilyupon Davidfrom that dayforward.And Samuelaroseand wentto Ramah.
"Those who contendwith the LORDwill be shattered;Againstthem He will thunderin the heavens,The LORDwill judgethe endsof the earth;And He will givestrengthto His king,And will exaltthe hornof His anointed."
So he saidto his men,"Farbe it from me becauseof the LORDthat I should dothisthingto my lord,the LORD'Sanointed,to stretchout my handagainst him, sincehe is the LORD'Sanointed."
"The LORDforbidthat I should stretchout my handagainst the LORD'Sanointed;but nowpleasetakethe spearthat is at his headand the jugof water,and let us go."
But Davidsaidto Abishai,"Do not destroyhim, for whocan stretchout his handagainst the LORD'Sanointedand be withoutguilt?"
Nevertheless, the peoplerefusedto listento the voiceof Samuel,and they said,"No,but there shall be a kingoverus,
"Nowthen, listento their voice;however,you shall solemnlywarnthem and tellthem of the procedureof the kingwhowill reignoverthem."
"About this timetomorrowI will sendyou a manfrom the landof Benjamin,and you shall anointhim to be princeoverMy peopleIsrael;and he will deliverMy peoplefrom the handof the Philistines.For I have regardedMy people,becausetheir cryhas cometo Me."
As they were goingdownto the edgeof the city,Samuelsaidto Saul,"Sayto the servantthat he might goaheadof us and passon, but you remain standingnow,that I may proclaimthe wordof Godto you."
