Then the Lord said, “Isaiah has walked around without clothes and without shoes for three years. This is a sign for Egypt and Ethiopia.
The king of Assyria {\cf2\super [201]} will defeat Egypt and Ethiopia. Assyria will take prisoners and lead them away from their countries. The old people and young people will be led without clothes and without shoes. They will be completely naked. The people from Egypt will be shamed.
I will let all those people be defeated by their enemies—and those enemies want to kill them. I will give those people to Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and his servants.”
So the Lord my Master says these things, “I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. And Nebuchadnezzar will carry away Egypt’s people. Nebuchadnezzar will take the many valuable things in Egypt. This will be the pay for Nebuchadnezzar’s army.
I will make the Nile River become dry land.\par Then I will sell the dry land to evil people.\par I will use strangers to make that land empty.\par I, the Lord, have spoken!”\par
But Thebes was defeated. Her people were taken away as prisoners to a foreign country. Soldiers beat her small children to death at every street corner. They threw lots {\cf2\super [9]} to see who got to keep the important people as slaves. They put chains on all the important men of Thebes.
