The Lord sent Chaldean, Aramean,  Moabite,  and Ammonite raiders against Jehoiakim. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord he had spoken through his servants the prophets.

“Look, the days are coming when everything in your palace and all that your predecessors have stored up until today will be carried off to Babylon; nothing will be left,”  says the Lord.


“This is what the Lord says: I am about to bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants, fulfilling  all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read,


For the Lord had said, ‘I will also remove Judah from my presence just as I have removed Israel.  I will reject this city Jerusalem, that I have chosen, and the temple about which I said, “My name will be there.” ’


So he prepared a big feast for them. When they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. The Aramean raiders  did not come into Israel’s land again.


So he brought against them the military commanders of the king of Assyria. They captured Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.


That messenger was still speaking when yet another came and reported, ‘The Chaldeans formed three bands, made a raid on the camels, and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you! ’


They are coming from a distant land, from the farthest horizon – the Lord and the weapons of his wrath – to destroy the whole country.


Every time it passes through, it will carry you away; it will pass through every morning – every day and every night. Only terror  will cause you to understand the message.


The Lord will bring on you, your people, and your father’s house such a time as has never been since Ephraim separated from Judah:  He will bring the king of Assyria.’


Is my inheritance like a hyena  to me? Are birds of prey circling her? Go, gather all the wild animals; bring them to devour her.


This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim  son of Josiah, king of Judah (which was the first year of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon).


I am going to send for all the families of the north”   #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #”and send for my servant  Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land, against its residents, and against all these surrounding nations, and I will completely destroy them and make them an example of horror  and scorn, and ruins for ever.


Another man was also prophesying in the name of the Lord  #– #Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim.  He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like all those of Jeremiah.


I will make this temple like Shiloh.  I will make this city an example for cursing for all the nations of the earth.” ’


Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I am about to hand this city over to the Chaldeans,  to Babylon’s king Nebuchadnezzar, and he will capture it.


However, when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon marched into the land,  we said, “Come, let’s go into Jerusalem to get away from the Chaldean and Aramean armies.” So we have been living in Jerusalem.’


These are the people Nebuchadnezzar deported:  in the seventh year, 3,023 Jews;


Zion stretches out her hands; there is no one to comfort her. The Lord has issued a decree against Jacob that his neighbours should be his adversaries. Jerusalem has become something impure  among them.


Then the nations from the surrounding provinces set out against him. They spread their net over him; he was caught in their pit.


the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans; Pekod, Shoa, and Koa;  and all the Assyrians with them #– #desirable young men, all of them governors and prefects, officers and administrators, all of them riding on steeds.


Therefore, because of you, Zion will be ploughed like a field, Jerusalem will become ruins, and the temple’s mountain will be a high thicket.


Look! I am raising up  the Chaldeans, that bitter,  impetuous nation that marches across the earth’s open spaces to seize territories not its own.
