Isaiah 47

¹ “Fall down in the dirt\par and sit there!\par Virgin daughter of the Chaldeans, {\cf2\super [409]} \par sit on the ground!\par You are not the ruler now!\par People will not think that you are\par a tender, delicate young lady anymore.\par

² \{Now you must work very hard.\}\par You must get the mill stones\par and grind the grain to make flour.\par Remove your veil and\par take off your fancy dresses.\par \{You must leave your country.\}\par Lift your skirts until\par men can see your legs,\par and cross the rivers. {\cf2\super [410]} \par

³ Men will see your private parts\par and use you for sex.\par I will make you pay\par for the bad things you did.\par And no man will come to help you.\par

⁴ “\{My people say,\}\par ‘God saves us.\par His name is:\par The Lord All-Powerful,\par The Holy One of Israel.’”\par

⁵ “So Babylon, sit there and be quiet.\par Daughter of the Chaldeans, {\cf2\super [411]} \par go into the darkness.\par Why? Because you will no longer be\par ‘The Queen of the Kingdoms.’\par

⁶ “I was angry at my people.\par Those people belong to me,\par but I was angry,\par so I made them not important.\par I gave them to you,\par and you punished them.\par But you showed no mercy to them.\par You made even the old people\par work hard.\par

⁷ You said,\par ‘I will live forever.\par I will always be The Queen.’\par You didn’t even notice the bad things\par you did to those people.\par You didn’t think about what would happen.\par

⁸ So now, ‘nice lady’ listen to me!\par You feel safe and you tell yourself,\par ‘I am the only important person.\par No one else is important like me.\par I will never be a widow.\par I will always have children.’\par

⁹ These two things will happen to you:\par First, you will lose your children.\par And then you will lose your husband.\par Yes, these things will really happen to you.\par And all of your magic\par and all of your powerful tricks\par will not save you.\par

¹⁰ You do bad things, but still you feel safe.\par You think to yourself,\par ‘No one sees the wrong things I do.’\par You think that your wisdom and knowledge\par will save you.\par You think to yourself,\par ‘I am the only one.\par No one is important like me.’\par

¹¹ “But troubles will come to you.\par You don’t know when it will happen,\par but disaster is coming.\par You will not be able to do anything\par to stop those troubles.\par You will be destroyed so quickly\par that you won’t know what happened!\par

¹² You worked hard all your life\par learning tricks and magic.\par So, start using your tricks and magic!\par Maybe those tricks will help you.\par Maybe you will be able to scare someone.\par

¹³ You have many, many advisers.\par Are you tired of the advice they give?\par Then send out your men that read\par the stars.\par They are able to tell when the month starts.\par So maybe they can tell you\par when your troubles will come.\par

¹⁴ “But those men will not even be able\par to save themselves.\par They will burn like straw.\par They will burn so fast that\par there will be no coals left\par to cook bread with.\par There will be no fire left to sit by.\par

¹⁵ That will happen to everything\par that you worked so hard for.\par The people you did business with\par all your life will leave you.\par Every person will go his own way.\par And there will be no one left to save you.”\par
