For the teraphimspeakiniquity,And the divinersseelyingvisionsAnd tellfalse~dreams;They comfortin vain.Therefore[the people] wanderlikesheep,They are afflicted,becausethereis noshepherd.
When Labanhad goneto shearhis flock,then Rachelstolethe householdidolsthat were her father's.
So he said,"I sawallIsraelScatteredon the mountains,Like sheepwhichhavenoshepherd.And the LORDsaid,'Thesehave nomaster.Let eachof them returnto his housein peace.'"
"But you smearwith lies;You are allworthlessphysicians.
"Howthen will you vainlycomfortme, For your answersremain[full of] falsehood?"
"Behold,allof them are false;Their worksare worthless,Their moltenimagesare windand emptiness.
Causing the omensof boastersto fail,Makingfoolsout of diviners,Causing wisemento drawbackAnd turningtheir knowledgeinto foolishness,
Those who fashiona gravenimageare allof them futile,and their preciousthingsare of noprofit;even their own witnessesfailto seeor know,sothat they will be putto shame.
"To whomwould you likenMe And makeMe equaland compareMe, That we would be alike?
But they are altogetherstupidand foolish[In their] disciplineof delusion--their idol is wood!
But, "Ah,LordGOD!"I said,"Look,the prophetsare tellingthem, 'You will not seethe swordnorwill you havefamine,but I will giveyou lastingpeacein thisplace.'"
Are thereanyamong the idolsof the nationswho giverain?Orcan the heavensgrantshowers?Is it not You, O LORDour God?Therefore we hopein You, For You are the one who has doneallthesethings.
"They keep sayingto those who despiseMe, 'The LORDhas said,"You will havepeace"'; And as for everyonewho walksin the stubbornnessof his own heart,They say,Calamitywill not comeupon you.'
"Behold,I am againstthose who have prophesiedfalse~dreams,"declaresthe LORD,"and relatedthem and ledMy peopleastrayby their falsehoodsand recklessboasting;yet I did not sendthem or commandthem, nordo they furnishthispeoplethe slightestbenefit,"declaresthe LORD.
"For they prophesya lieto you in orderto removeyou farfrom your land;and I will driveyou out and you will perish.
"So do not listento the wordsof the prophetswho speakto you, saying,'You will not servethe kingof Babylon,'for they prophesya lieto you;
"But as for you, do not listento your prophets,your diviners,your dreamers,your soothsayersor your sorcererswhospeakto you, saying,'You will not servethe kingof Babylon.'
Then Jeremiahthe prophetsaidto Hananiahthe prophet,"Listennow,Hananiah,the LORDhas not sentyou, and you have made thispeopletrustin a lie.
"For thussaysthe LORDof hosts,the Godof Israel,Do not let your prophetswhoare in your midstand your divinersdeceiveyou, and do not listento the dreamswhichthey dream.
"Wherethen are your prophetswhoprophesiedto you, saying,The kingof Babylonwill not comeagainstyou or againstthisland'?
"Israelis a scatteredflock,the lionshave driven[them] away.The firstone[who] devouredhim was the kingof Assyria,and thislastone[who] has brokenhis bonesis Nebuchadnezzarkingof Babylon.
And with you I shatterthe shepherdand his flock,And with you I shatterthe farmerand his team,And with you I shattergovernorsand prefects.
"They have healedthe brokennessof My peoplesuperficially,Saying,'Peace,peace,'But thereis nopeace.
"They healthe brokennessof the daughterof My peoplesuperficially,Saying,'Peace,peace,'But thereis nopeace.
Your prophetshave seenfor you false and foolish[visions]; And they have not exposedyour iniquitySo as to restoreyou from captivity,But they have seenfor you false and misleadingoracles.
"For the kingof Babylonstandsat the partingof the way,at the headof the twoways,to usedivination;he shakesthe arrows,he consultsthe householdidols,he looksat the liver.
while they seefor you false visions,while they divineliesfor you-- to placeyou on the necksof the wickedwhoare slain,whosedayhas come,in the timeof the punishmentof the end.
"They were scatteredfor lackof a shepherd,and they becamefoodfor everybeastof the fieldand were scattered.
"As I live,"declaresthe LordGOD,"surelybecauseMy flockhas becomea prey,My flockhas even becomefoodfor allthe beastsof the fieldfor lackof a shepherd,and My shepherdsdid not searchfor My flock,but [rather] the shepherdsfedthemselves and did not feedMy flock;
For the sonsof Israelwill remainfor manydayswithoutkingor prince,withoutsacrificeor [sacred] pillarand withoutephodor householdidols.
"I will surelyassembleallof you, Jacob,I will surelygatherthe remnantof Israel.I will putthem togetherlike sheepin the fold;Like a flockin the midstof its pastureThey will be noisywith men.
"Whatprofitis the idolwhenits makerhas carvedit, [Or] an image,a teacherof falsehood?For [its] makertrustsin his [own] handiworkWhen he fashionsspeechlessidols.
"Woeto the worthlessshepherdWho leavesthe flock!A swordwill be on his armAnd on his righteye!His armwill be totallywitheredAnd his righteyewill be blind."
whowill goout and comein beforethem, and whowill leadthem out and bringthem in, so that the congregationof the LORDwill not be like sheepwhichhavenoshepherd."
Seeingthe people,He felt compassionfor them, becausethey were distressedand dispiritedlikesheepwithouta shepherd.
When Jesus went ashore,He sawa largecrowd,and He felt compassionfor them becausethey were likesheepwithouta shepherd;and He beganto teachthem many things.
and the signor the wondercomestrue, concerning whichhe spoketo you, saying,Let us goafterothergods(whomyou have not known)and let us servethem,'
Then the fivemenwho wentto spyout the countryof Laishsaidto their kinsmen,"Do you knowthat thereare in thesehousesan ephodand householdidolsand a gravenimageand a moltenimage?Nowtherefore, considerwhatyou should do."
