"Woeto you who are well-fednow,for you shall be hungry.Woe[to you] who laughnow,for you shall mournand weep.
Therefore,thussaysthe LordGOD,"Behold,My servantswill eat,but you will be hungry.Behold,My servantswill drink,but you will be thirsty.Behold,My servantswill rejoice,but you will be putto shame.
Be miserableand mournand weep;let your laughterbe turnedinto mourningand your joyto gloom.
Evenin laughterthe heartmay be in pain,And the endof joymay be grief.
Becauseyou say,"I amrich,and have become wealthy,and haveneedof nothing,"and you do not knowthat you are wretchedand miserableand poorand blindand naked,
Whilethey are saying,"Peaceand safety!"thendestructionwill comeupon them suddenlylikelabor painsupon a woman with child,and they will not escape.
and [there must be no] filthinessand silly talk,orcoarse jesting,whichare not fitting,but rathergiving of thanks.
"In that placetherewill be weepingand gnashingof teethwhenyou seeAbrahamand Isaacand Jacoband allthe prophetsin the kingdomof God,but yourselvesbeing thrownout.
"But Godsaidto him, 'You fool!This[very] nightyour soulis requiredof you; and [now] whowill own whatyou have prepared?'
And they [began] laughingat Him, knowingthat she had died.
Liketangledthorns,And like those who are drunkenwith their drink,They are consumedAs stubblecompletelywithered.
"Then I will turnyour festivalsinto mourningAnd allyour songsinto lamentation;And I will bringsackclothon everyone'sloinsAnd baldnesson everyhead.And I will makeit like [a time of] mourningfor an onlyson,And the endof it will be like a bitterday.
And thesealsoreelwith wineand staggerfrom strongdrink:The priestand the prophetreelwith strongdrink,They are confusedby wine,they staggerfrom strongdrink;They reelwhile having visions,They totter[when rendering] judgment.
They sliceoff[what is] on the righthandbut [still] are hungry,And they eat[what is] on the lefthandbut they are not satisfied;Eachof them eatsthe fleshof his own arm.
They will passthrough the land hard-pressedand famished,and it will turnout that whenthey are hungry,they will be enragedand cursetheir kingand their Godas they faceupward.
For as the cracklingof thornbushesundera pot,Sois the laughterof the fool;And thistoois futility.
Sorrowis betterthanlaughter,For when a faceis sada heartmay be happy.
I saidof laughter,"It is madness,"and of pleasure,"Whatdoes it accomplish?"
That I not be fulland deny[You] and say,"Whois the LORD?"Or that I not be in wantand steal,And profanethe nameof my God.
He shall goto the generationof his fathers;They will neverseethe light.
"Those who were fullhirethemselves out for bread,But those who were hungrycease[to hunger]. Eventhe barrengivesbirthto seven,But she who has manychildrenlanguishes.
"But woeto you who are rich,for you are receivingyour comfortin full.
"Woe[to you] whenallmenspeakwellof you, for their fathersused to treatthe false prophetsin the sameway.
