But Jonahroseup to fleeto Tarshishfrom the presenceof the LORD.So he wentdownto Joppa,founda shipwhich was goingto Tarshish,paidthe fareand wentdowninto it to gowith them to Tarshishfrom the presenceof the LORD.
They heardthe soundof the LORDGodwalkingin the gardenin the coolof the day,and the manand his wifehidthemselves from the presenceof the LORDGodamongthe treesof the garden.
Then Cainwentout from the presenceof the LORD,and settledin the landof Nod,eastof Eden.
And he was afraidand aroseand ranfor his lifeand cameto Beersheba,whichbelongs to Judah,and lefthis servantthere.
Then he camethereto a caveand lodgedthere;and behold,the wordof the LORD[came] to him, and He saidto him, "Whatare you doing here,Elijah?"
"Nowthen, let my lordsendto his servantswheatand barley,oiland wine,of whichhe has spoken.
"We will cutwhatevertimberyou needfrom Lebanonand bringit to you on raftsby seato Joppa,so that you may carryit up to Jerusalem."
For the kinghad shipswhich wentto Tarshishwith the servantsof Huram;onceevery threeyearsthe shipsof Tarshishcamebringinggoldand silver,ivoryand apesand peacocks.
Then they gavemoneyto the masonsand carpenters,and food,drinkand oilto the Sidoniansand to the Tyrians,to bringcedarwoodfrom Lebanonto the seaat Joppa,according to the permissionthey had from Cyruskingof Persia.
Then the LORDsaidto Satan,"Behold,allthat he has is in your power,onlydo not putforthyour handon him." So Satandepartedfrom the presenceof the LORD.
Then Satanwentout from the presenceof the LORDand smoteJobwith soreboilsfrom the soleof his footto the crownof his head.
Those who godownto the seain ships,Who dobusinesson greatwaters;
Againstallthe shipsof TarshishAnd againstallthe beautifulcraft.
The oracleconcerning Tyre.Wail,O shipsof Tarshish,For [Tyre] is destroyed,withouthouse[or] harbor;It is reportedto them from the landof Cyprus.
Overflowyour landlike the Nile,O daughterof Tarshish,Thereis nomorerestraint.
Passoverto Tarshish;Wail,O inhabitantsof the coastland.
"Surelythe coastlandswill waitfor Me; And the shipsof Tarshish[will come] first,To bringyour sonsfrom afar,Their silverand their goldwith them, For the nameof the LORDyour God,And for the HolyOneof IsraelbecauseHe has glorifiedyou.
Beatensilveris broughtfrom Tarshish,And goldfrom Uphaz,The workof a craftsmanand of the handsof a goldsmith;Violetand purpleare their clothing;They are allthe workof skilledmen.
"Now you, sonof man,listento whatI am speakingto you; do not be rebelliouslike that rebellioushouse.Openyour mouthand eatwhatI am givingyou."
"Tarshishwas your customerbecauseof the abundanceof all[kinds] of wealth;with silver,iron,tinand leadthey paidfor your wares.
So the Spiritliftedme up and tookme away; and I wentembitteredin the rageof my spirit,and the handof the LORDwas strongon me.
Then the menbecameextremelyfrightenedand they saidto him, "Howcould you dothis?"For the menknewthat he was fleeingfrom the presenceof the LORD,becausehe had toldthem.
He prayedto the LORDand said,"PleaseLORD,was not thiswhatI saidwhileI was stillin my [own] country?Thereforein order to forestallthis I fledto Tarshish,for I knewthat You are a graciousand compassionateGod,slowto angerand abundantin lovingkindness,and one who relentsconcerningcalamity.
But Jesussaidto him, "No one,after puttinghis handto the plowand lookingback,is fitfor the kingdomof God."
But Paulkept insistingthat they should not take him alongwho had desertedthem in Pamphyliaand had not gonewith them to the work.
"So,KingAgrippa,I did not provedisobedientto the heavenlyvision,
Nowin Joppathere was a disciplenamedTabitha(whichtranslated[in Greek] is calledDorcas);this womanwas aboundingwith deedsof kindnessand charitywhichshe continually did.
Since Lyddawas nearJoppa,the disciples,having heardthat Peterwas there,senttwomento him, imploringhim, "Do not delayin comingto us."
It becameknownalloverJoppa,and manybelievedin the Lord.
And Peter stayedmanydaysin Joppawith a tanner[named] Simon.
For ifI preachthe gospel,I have nothingto boastof, for I am undercompulsion;for woeis me ifI do not preach the gospel.
Thesewill paythe penaltyof eternaldestruction,awayfrom the presenceof the Lordand from the gloryof His power,
and Me-jarkonand Rakkon,with the territoryoveragainstJoppa.
