"Becauseof the lightnessof her harlotry,she pollutedthe landand committedadulterywith stonesand trees.
Who sayto a tree,'You are my father,'And to a stone,'You gaveme birth.'For they have turned[their] backto Me, And not [their] face;But in the timeof their troublethey will say,'Ariseand saveus.'
"Liftup your eyesto the bareheightsand see;Wherehave you not been violated?By the roadsyou have satfor them Like an Arabin the desert,And you have polluteda landWith your harlotryand with your wickedness.
"Among the smooth[stones] of the ravineIs your portion,they are your lot;Evento them you have pouredout a drinkoffering,You have madea grain offering.Shall I relentconcerningthesethings?
But they are altogetherstupidand foolish[In their] disciplineof delusion--their idol is wood!
"I broughtyou into the fruitfullandTo eatits fruitand its goodthings.But you cameand defiledMy land,And My inheritanceyou madean abomination.
"Woeto him who saysto a [piece of] wood,Awake!'To a mutestone,'Arise!'[And] that is [your] teacher?Behold,it is overlaidwith goldand silver,And thereis nobreathat allinsideit.
My peopleconsulttheir woodenidol, and their [diviner's] wandinformsthem; For a spiritof harlotryhas led[them] astray,And they have playedthe harlot,[departing] from their God.
"They uncoveredher nakedness;they tookher sonsand her daughters,but they slewher with the sword.Thus she becamea bywordamong women,and they executedjudgmentson her.
"You also tookyour beautifuljewels[made] of My goldand of My silver,whichI had givenyou, and madefor yourself maleimagesthat you might playthe harlotwith them.
but I sayto you that everyonewho divorceshis wife,exceptfor [the] reasonof unchastity,makesher commit adultery;and whoevermarriesa divorcedwomancommits adultery.
"I will firstdoublyrepaytheir iniquityand their sin,becausethey have pollutedMy land;they have filledMy inheritancewith the carcassesof their detestableidolsand with their abominations."
and they playedthe harlotin Egypt.They playedthe harlotin their youth;theretheir breastswere pressedand theretheir virginbosomwas handled.
"Thus you longedfor the lewdnessof your youth,when the Egyptianshandledyour bosombecauseof the breastsof your youth.
"Contendwith your mother,contend,For she is not my wife,and I am not her husband;And let her putawayher harlotryfrom her faceAnd her adulteryfrom betweenher breasts,
"But comehere,you sonsof a sorceress,Offspringof an adultererand a prostitute.
To You, O LORD,I cry;For firehas devouredthe pasturesof the wildernessAnd the flamehas burnedup allthe treesof the field.
