Abramsaidto the kingof Sodom,"I have swornto the LORDGodMostHigh,possessorof heavenand earth,
nowtherefore, swearto me hereby Godthat you will not dealfalselywith me or with my offspringor with my posterity,but according to the kindnessthat I have shownto you, you shall showto me and to the landin whichyou have sojourned."
"The LORD,the Godof heaven,whotookme from my father'shouseand from the landof my birth,and whospoketo me and whosworeto me, saying,To your descendantsI will givethisland,'He will sendHis angelbeforeyou, and you will takea wifefor my sonfrom there.
Rebekahsaidto Isaac,"I am tiredof livingbecauseof the daughtersof Heth;ifJacobtakesa wifefrom the daughtersof Heth,like these,from the daughtersof the land,whatgood will my lifebe to me?"
So IsaaccalledJacoband blessedhim and chargedhim, and saidto him, "You shall not takea wifefrom the daughtersof Canaan.
So Esausawthat the daughtersof Canaandispleasedhis fatherIsaac;
"Intermarrywith us; giveyour daughtersto us and takeour daughtersfor yourselves.
Judahsawtherea daughterof a certainCanaanitewhose namewas Shua;and he tookher and wentin to her.
He said,"Swearto me." So he sworeto him. Then Israelbowed[in worship] at the headof the bed.
Then Josephmade the sonsof Israelswear,saying,"Godwill surelytakecareof you, and you shall carrymy bonesup from here."
that the sonsof Godsawthat the daughtersof menwere beautiful;and they tookwivesfor themselves, whomeverthey chose.
The Nephilimwere on the earthin thosedays,and alsoafterward,whenthe sonsof Godcamein to the daughtersof men,and they bore[children] to them. Thosewere the mightymenwho[were] of old,menof renown.
Hezekiahprayedbeforethe LORDand said,"O LORD,the Godof Israel,who are enthroned[above] the cherubim,You are the God,You alone,of allthe kingdomsof the earth.You have madeheavenand earth.
Then Huramcontinued,"Blessedbe the LORD,the Godof Israel,whohas madeheavenand earth,whohas givenKingDavida wiseson,endowedwith discretionand understanding,whowill builda housefor the LORDand a royalpalacefor himself.
"Thusthey answeredus, saying,'We are the servantsof the Godof heavenand earthand are rebuildingthe templethat was builtmanyyearsago,which a greatkingof Israelbuiltand finished.
So I contendedwith them and cursedthem and strucksomeof them and pulledout their hair,and made them swearby God,"You shall not giveyour daughtersto their sons,nortakeof their daughtersfor your sonsor for yourselves.
"You aloneare the LORD.You have madethe heavens,The heavenof heavenswith alltheir host,The earthand allthat is on it, The seasand allthat is in them. You givelifeto allof them And the heavenlyhostbowsdownbefore You.
May you be blessedof the LORD,Makerof heavenand earth.
Givethanksto the Godof heaven,For His lovingkindnessis everlasting.
"You shall not takethe nameof the LORDyour Godin vain,for the LORDwill not leavehim unpunishedwhotakesHis namein vain.
an oathbefore the LORDshall be madeby the twoof them that he has not laidhandson his neighbor'sproperty;and its ownershall accept[it], and he shall not makerestitution.
"Now concerning everythingwhichI have saidto you, be on your guard;and do not mentionthe nameof othergods,norlet [them] be heardfrom your mouth.
and you might takesomeof his daughtersfor your sons,and his daughtersmight playthe harlotwith their godsand cause your sons[also] to playthe harlotwith their gods.
"I have swornby Myself, The wordhas goneforthfrom My mouthin righteousnessAnd will not turnback,That to Me everykneewill bow,everytonguewill swear[allegiance].
"Hearthis,O houseof Jacob,who are namedIsraelAnd who cameforthfrom the loinsof Judah,Who swearby the nameof the LORDAnd invokethe Godof Israel,[But] not in truthnorin righteousness.
"Becausehe who is blessedin the earthWill be blessedby the Godof truth;And he who swearsin the earthWill swearby the Godof truth;Becausethe formertroublesare forgotten,And becausethey are hiddenfrom My sight!
Thusyou shall sayto them, "The godsthat did not makethe heavensand the earthwill perishfrom the earthand from underthe heavens."
"Then ifthey will reallylearnthe waysof My people,to swearby My name,'As the LORDlives,'evenas they taughtMy peopleto swearby Baal,they will be builtup in the midstof My people.
Takewivesand becomethe fathersof sonsand daughters,and takewivesfor your sonsand giveyour daughtersto husbands,that they may bearsonsand daughters;and multiplythereand do not decrease.
And you will swear,'As the LORDlives,'In truth,in justiceand in righteousness;Then the nationswill blessthemselves in Him, And in Him they will glory."
You shall not swearfalselyby My name,so as to profanethe nameof your God;I am the LORD.
"And those who bowdownon the housetopsto the hostof heaven,And those who bowdown[and] swearto the LORDand [yet] swearby Milcom,
(then the priestshall have the womanswearwith the oathof the curse,and the priestshall sayto the woman),"the LORDmakeyou a curseand an oathamongyour peopleby the LORD'Smakingyour thighwasteawayand your abdomenswell;
A wifeis boundas longas her husbandlives;but ifher husbandis dead,she is freeto be marriedto whomshe wishes,onlyin the Lord.
"You shall fearthe LORDyour God;you shall serveHim and clingto Him, and you shall swearby His name.
"You shall fear[only] the LORDyour God;and you shall worshipHim and swearby His name.
For menswearby one greater[than themselves], and with them an oath[given] as confirmationis an endof everydispute.
"Nowtherefore, pleaseswearto me by the LORD,sinceI have dealtkindlywith you, that you alsowill dealkindlywith my father'shousehold,and giveme a pledgeof truth,
Then his fatherand his mothersaidto him, "Is therenowomanamong the daughtersof your relatives,or among allour people,that you goto takea wifefrom the uncircumcisedPhilistines?"But Samsonsaidto his father,"Gether for me, for she looksgoodto me."
Jonathanmade Davidvowagainbecause of his lovefor him, becausehe lovedhim as he lovedhis own life.
Then Davidsaidto him, "Will you bringme downto thisband?"And he said,"Swearto me by Godthat you will not killme or deliverme into the handsof my master,and I will bringyou downto thisband."
