Then Abrammovedhis tentand cameand dweltby the oaksof Mamre,whichare in Hebron,and therehe builtan altarto the LORD.
Now Sarahlivedone hundredand twenty-sevenyears;[these were] the yearsof the lifeof Sarah.
Afterthis,AbrahamburiedSarahhis wifein the caveof the fieldat MachpelahfacingMamre(that is, Hebron)in the landof Canaan.
Then Isaacbroughther into his motherSarah'stent,and he tookRebekah,and she becamehis wife,and he lovedher; thus Isaacwas comfortedafterhis mother'sdeath.
So Esauborea grudgeagainstJacobbecauseof the blessingwith whichhis fatherhad blessedhim; and Esausaidto himself,"The daysof mourningfor my fatherare near;then I will killmy brotherJacob."
Jacobcameto his fatherIsaacat Mamreof Kiriath-arba(that is, Hebron),whereAbrahamand Isaachad sojourned.
Then he saidto him, "Gonowand seeabout the welfareof your brothersand the welfareof the flock,and bringwordbackto me." So he senthim from the valleyof Hebron,and he cameto Shechem.
Then Josephfellon his father'sface,and weptoverhim and kissedhim.
When they cameto the threshingfloorof Atad,whichis beyondthe Jordan,they lamentedtherewith a verygreatand sorrowfullamentation;and he observedsevendaysmourningfor his father.
They mournedand weptand fasteduntileveningfor Sauland his sonJonathanand for the peopleof the LORDand the houseof Israel,becausethey had fallenby the sword.
Then Davidchantedwith thislamentoverSauland Jonathanhis son,
The timethat Davidwas kingin Hebronoverthe houseof Judahwas sevenyearsand sixmonths.
So allthe eldersof Israelcameto the kingat Hebron,and KingDavidmadea covenantwith them beforethe LORDat Hebron;then they anointedDavidkingoverIsrael.
At Hebronhe reignedoverJudahsevenyearsand sixmonths,and in Jerusalemhe reignedthirty-threeyearsoverallIsraeland Judah.
To the sonsof Aaronthey gavethe [following] citiesof refuge:Hebron,Libnahalso with its pasturelands,Jattir,Eshtemoawith its pasturelands,
Then Jeremiahchanteda lamentfor Josiah.And allthe male and female singersspeakaboutJosiahin their lamentationsto this day.And they madethem an ordinancein Israel;behold,they are also writtenin the Lamentations.
Now as for the villageswith their fields,someof the sonsof Judahlivedin Kiriath-arbaand its towns,in Dibonand its towns,and in Jekabzeeland its villages,
Do not weepfor the deador mournfor him, [But] weepcontinuallyfor the one who goesaway; For he will neverreturnOr seehis nativeland.
Thereforethussaysthe LORDin regardto Jehoiakimthe sonof Josiah,kingof Judah,"They will not lamentfor him: 'Alas,my brother!'or, 'Alas,sister!'They will not lamentfor him: 'Alasfor the master!'or, 'Alasfor his splendor!'
When they had goneup into the Negev,they cameto HebronwhereAhiman,Sheshaiand Talmai,the descendantsof Anakwere. (Now Hebronwas builtsevenyearsbeforeZoanin Egypt.)
When allthe congregationsawthat Aaronhad died,allthe houseof Israelweptfor Aaronthirtydays.
Thenthe Jewswho were with her in the house,and consolingher, when they sawthat Marygotup quicklyand wentout, they followedher, supposingthat she was goingto the tombto weepthere.
Jesuswept.
[Some] devoutmenburiedStephen,and madeloudlamentationoverhim.
So the sonsof Israelweptfor Mosesin the plainsof Moabthirtydays;then the daysof weeping[and] mourningfor Mosescameto an end.
He capturedit and its kingand allits cities,and they struckthem with the edgeof the sword,and utterlydestroyedeveryperson[who was] in it. He leftnosurvivor.Justas he had doneto Hebron,sohe didto Debirand its king,as he had also doneto Libnahand its king.
Now he gaveto Calebthe sonof Jephunneha portionamongthe sonsof Judah,accordingto the commandof the LORDto Joshua,[namely], Kiriath-arba,[Arba being] the fatherof Anak(that is, Hebron).
and Humtahand Kiriath-arba(that is, Hebron),and Zior;ninecitieswith their villages.
So they setapartKedeshin Galileein the hillcountryof Naphtaliand Shechemin the hillcountryof Ephraim,and Kiriath-arba(that is, Hebron)in the hillcountryof Judah.
Thus they gavethem Kiriath-arba,[Arba being] the fatherof Anak(that is, Hebron),in the hillcountryof Judah,with its surroundingpasturelands.
So Judahwentagainstthe Canaaniteswho livedin Hebron(now the nameof Hebronformerly[was] Kiriath-arba);and they struckSheshaiand Ahimanand Talmai.
"For as longas the sonof Jesseliveson the earth,neitheryou noryour kingdomwill be established.Therefore now,sendand bringhim to me, for he mustsurelydie."
Then Samueldied;and allIsraelgatheredtogether and mournedfor him, and buriedhim at his housein Ramah.And Davidaroseand wentdownto the wildernessof Paran.
Now Samuelwas dead,and allIsraelhad lamentedhim and buriedhim in Ramah,his own city.And Saulhad removedfrom the landthose who were mediumsand spiritists.
