This sad message was given the year King Ahaz died. {\cf2\super [154]}
Ahaz {\cf2\super [70]} was the son of Jotham. {\cf2\super [71]} Jotham was the son of Uzziah. {\cf2\super [72]} Rezin {\cf2\super [73]} was the king of Aram, {\cf2\super [74]} Pekah son of Remaliah {\cf2\super [75]} was the king of Israel. During the time Ahaz was king of Judah, Rezin and Pekah went up to Jerusalem to fight against it. But they were not able to defeat the city.
“Jeremiah, have you heard what the people are saying? Those people are saying, ‘The Lord turned away from the two families of Israel and Judah. The Lord chose those people, but now he does not even accept them as a nation.’”
Your punishment is complete, Zion. {\cf2\super [32]} \par You will not go into captivity again.\par But the Lord will punish your sins,\par people of Edom.\par He will uncover your sins.\par
So I punished you! I took away part of your allowance (land). I let your enemies, the daughters (cities) of the Philistines do what they wanted to you. Even they were shocked at the bad things you did.
\{God said,\} “In the past, you were proud and made fun of your sister Sodom. But you won’t do that again.
The Lord my Master says this, “You have done many bad things. Your sins are very clear. You forced me to remember that you are guilty. So the enemy will catch you in his hand.
“‘People of Jerusalem, you killed many people. You made filthy idols. You are guilty, and the time has come to punish you. Your end has come. Other nations will make fun of you. Those countries will laugh at you.
Aram traded with you because you had so many good things. They traded emeralds, purple cloth, fine needlework, fine linen, coral {\cf2\super [226]} and rubies for the things you sold.
Now I will strip her. She will be naked, so all her lovers can see her. No person will be able to save her from my power. {\cf2\super [16]}
“I will heal Israel!\par Then people will know\par that Ephraim {\cf2\super [69]} sinned.\par People will know about Samaria’s {\cf2\super [70]} lies.\par People will know about the thieves\par that come and go in that town.\par
At that time, I will punish the people\par that hurt you.\par I will save my hurt people.\par I will bring back the people\par that were forced to run away.\par And I will make them famous.\par People everywhere will praise them.\par
So don’t judge before the right time; wait until the Lord comes. He will shine light on the things that are hidden in darkness. He will make known the secret purposes of people’s hearts. Then God will give every person the praise he should get.
