I will also bringupon you a swordwhich will executevengeancefor the covenant;and when you gathertogether into your cities,I will sendpestilenceamongyou, so that you shall be deliveredinto enemyhands.
So the LORDsenta pestilenceupon Israelfrom the morninguntilthe appointedtime,and seventythousandmenof the peoplefrom Danto Beershebadied.
"When Your peopleIsraelare defeatedbeforean enemy,becausethey have sinnedagainst You, if they turnto You againand confessYour nameand prayand makesupplicationto You in thishouse,
"Ifthere is faminein the land,ifthere is pestilence,ifthere is blight[or] mildew,locust[or] grasshopper,iftheir enemybesiegesthem in the landof their cities,whateverplague,whateversickness[there is],
Shalmaneserkingof Assyriacameup againsthim, and Hosheabecamehis servantand paidhim tribute.
Indeedthe armyof the Arameanscamewith a smallnumber of men;yet the LORDdelivereda verygreatarmyinto their hands,becausethey had forsakenthe LORD,the Godof their fathers.Thus they executedjudgmenton Joash.
O LORD,Godof vengeance,Godof vengeance,shineforth!
Then they said,"The Godof the Hebrewshas metwith us. Please,let us goa threedays'journeyinto the wildernessthat we may sacrificeto the LORDour God,otherwiseHe will fallupon us with pestilenceorwith the sword."
"But ifyou refuseand rebel,You will be devouredby the sword."Truly,the mouthof the LORDhas spoken.
I will destineyou for the sword,And allof you will bowdownto the slaughter.BecauseI called,but you did not answer;I spoke,but you did not hear.And you didevilin My sightAnd chosethat in whichI did not delight."
"I will makevoidthe counselof Judahand Jerusalemin thisplace,and I will cause them to fallby the swordbeforetheir enemiesand by the handof those who seektheir life;and I will giveover their carcassesas foodfor the birdsof the skyand the beastsof the earth.
I will sendthe sword,the famineand the pestilenceupon them untilthey are destroyedfrom the landwhichI gaveto them and their forefathers.'"
There is a soundof fugitivesand refugeesfrom the landof Babylon,To declarein Zionthe vengeanceof the LORDour God,Vengeancefor His temple.
Sharpenthe arrows,fillthe quivers!The LORDhas arousedthe spiritof the kingsof the Medes,BecauseHis purposeis againstBabylonto destroyit; For it is the vengeanceof the LORD,vengeancefor His temple.
"I will scatterthem among the nations,whomneitherthey northeir fathershave known;and I will sendthe swordafterthem untilI have annihilatedthem."
On the groundin the streetsLieyoungand old;My virginsand my youngmenHave fallenby the sword.You have slain[them] in the dayof Your anger,You have slaughtered,not sparing.
"Or[if] I should bringa swordon that countryand say,'Let the swordpassthrough the countryand cutoffmanand beastfrom it,'
"I will make you passunderthe rod,and I will bringyou into the bondof the covenant;
Thereforethussaysthe LordGOD,"Behold,I will bringupon you a swordand I will cutofffrom you manand beast.
"Sonof man,speakto the sonsof your peopleand sayto them, 'IfI bringa swordupon a land,and the peopleof the landtakeonemanfrom amongthem and makehim their watchman,
Moreover, I will sendon you famineand wildbeasts,and they will bereaveyou of children;plagueand bloodshedalso will passthrough you, and I will bringthe swordon you. I, the LORD,have spoken.'"
and say,'Mountainsof Israel,listento the wordof the LordGOD!Thussaysthe LordGODto the mountains,the hills,the ravinesand the valleys:"Behold,I Myselfam going to bringa swordon you, and I will destroyyour highplaces.
The swordwill whirlagainst their cities,And will demolishtheir gate barsAnd consume[them] becauseof their counsels.
I shall also grantpeacein the land,so that you may liedownwith noonemaking [you] tremble.I shall also eliminateharmfulbeastsfrom the land,and noswordwill passthroughyour land.
"I senta plagueamong you after the mannerof Egypt;I slewyour youngmenby the swordalongwith your capturedhorses,And I made the stenchof your campriseup in your nostrils;Yet you have not returnedto Me," declaresthe LORD.
BeforeHim goespestilence,And plaguecomesafterHim.
"I will smitethem with pestilenceand dispossessthem, and I will makeyou into a nationgreaterand mightierthanthey."
But those who diedby the plaguewere 14,700,besidesthose who diedon accountof Korah.
Mosesspoketo the people,saying,"Armmenfrom amongyou for the war,that they may goagainstMidianto executethe LORD'Svengeanceon Midian.
and there will be greatearthquakes,and in variousplacesplaguesand famines;and there will be terrorsand greatsignsfrom heaven.
"The LORDwill make the pestilenceclingto you untilHe has consumedyou from the landwhereyou are enteringto possessit.
Outsidethe swordwill bereave,And insideterror--Bothyoungmanand virgin,The nurslingwith the manof grayhair.
Vengeanceis Mine, and retribution,In due timetheir footwill slip;For the dayof their calamityis near,And the impendingthingsare hasteningupon them.'
IfI sharpenMy flashingsword,And My handtakesholdon justice,I will rendervengeanceon My adversaries,And I will repaythose who hateMe.
Then 3,000menof Judahwentdownto the cleftof the rockof Etamand saidto Samson,"Do you not knowthat the Philistinesare rulersover us? Whatthen is thisthat you have doneto us?" And he saidto them, "As they didto me, soI have doneto them."
