Hyenaswill howlin their fortifiedtowers And jackalsin their luxuriouspalaces.Her [fateful] timealso will sooncomeAnd her dayswill not be prolonged.
YetYou have crushedus in a placeof jackalsAnd coveredus with the shadowof death.
"I will also makeit a possessionfor the hedgehogand swampsof water,and I will sweepit with the broomof destruction,"declaresthe LORDof hosts.
For You have madea cityinto a heap,A fortifiedcityinto a ruin;A palaceof strangersis a citynomore,It will neverbe rebuilt.
Becausethe palacehas been abandoned,the populatedcityforsaken.Hilland watch-towerhave becomecavesforever,A delightfor wilddonkeys,a pasturefor flocks;
Thornswill comeup in its fortifiedtowers,Nettlesand thistlesin its fortifiedcities;It will also be a hauntof jackals[And] an abodeof ostriches.
The desertcreatureswill meetwith the wolves,The hairygoatalso will cryto its kind;Yes,the nightmonsterwill settlethereAnd will findherself a restingplace.
The scorchedlandwill becomea poolAnd the thirstygroundspringsof water;In the hauntof jackals,its restingplace,Grass[becomes] reedsand rushes.
"The beastsof the fieldwill glorifyMe, The jackalsand the ostriches,BecauseI have givenwatersin the wildernessAnd riversin the desert,To givedrinkto My chosenpeople.
"The disasterof Moabwill sooncome,And his calamityhas swiftlyhastened.
For thussaysthe LORDof hosts,the Godof Israel:"The daughterof Babylonis like a threshingfloorAt the timeit is stampedfirm;Yetin a littlewhilethe timeof harvestwill comefor her."
"I will makeJerusalema heapof ruins, A hauntof jackals;And I will makethe citiesof Judaha desolation,withoutinhabitant."
Evenjackalsofferthe breast,They nursetheir young;[But] the daughterof my peoplehas become cruelLike ostrichesin the wilderness.
Becauseof thisI must lamentand wail,I must gobarefootand naked;I must makea lamentlike the jackalsAnd a mourninglike the ostriches.
"For the visionis yetfor the appointedtime;It hastenstoward the goaland it will not fail.Thoughit tarries,waitfor it; For it will certainlycome,it will not delay.
Flockswill liedownin her midst,Allbeastswhich range in herds;Boththe pelicanand the hedgehogWill lodgein the topsof her pillars;Birdswill singin the window,Desolation[will be] on the threshold;For He has laidbarethe cedarwork.
Vengeanceis Mine, and retribution,In due timetheir footwill slip;For the dayof their calamityis near,And the impendingthingsare hasteningupon them.'
and in [their] greedthey will exploityou with false words;their judgmentfrom long agois not idle,and their destructionis not asleep.
