And there was strifebetweenthe herdsmenof Abram'slivestockand the herdsmenof Lot'slivestock.Now the Canaaniteand the Perizzitewere dwellingthenin the land.
Now Jacobcamesafelyto the cityof Shechem,whichis in the landof Canaan,when he camefrom Paddan-aram,and campedbeforethe city.
When Shechemthe sonof Hamorthe Hivite,the princeof the land,sawher, he tookher and laywith her by force.
Then Jacobsaidto Simeonand Levi,"You have broughttroubleon me by makingme odiousamong the inhabitantsof the land,among the Canaanitesand the Perizzites;and my menbeing fewin number,they will gathertogether againstme and attackme and I will be destroyed,I and my household."
So they gaveto Jacoballthe foreigngodswhichthey hadand the ringswhichwere in their ears,and Jacobhidthem underthe oakwhichwas nearShechem.
Then Rehoboamwentto Shechem,for allIsraelhad cometo Shechemto makehim king.
Then JeroboambuiltShechemin the hillcountryof Ephraim,and livedthere. And he wentout from thereand builtPenuel.
Godhas spokenin His holiness:"I will exult,I will portionout Shechemand measureout the valleyof Succoth.
And as raiderswaitfor a man,[So] a bandof priestsmurderon the wayto Shechem;Surelythey have committedcrime.
SoHe cameto a cityof SamariacalledSychar,nearthe parcel of groundthat Jacobgaveto his sonJoseph;
"[From there] they were removedto Shechemand laidin the tombwhichAbrahamhad purchasedfor a sumof moneyfrom the sonsof Hamorin Shechem.
"Are they not acrossthe Jordan,westof the waytoward the sunset,in the landof the Canaaniteswho livein the Arabah,oppositeGilgal,besidethe oaksof Moreh?
By faithhe lived as an alienin the landof promise,as in a foreign[land], dwellingin tentswith Isaacand Jacob,fellow heirsof the samepromise;
So they setapartKedeshin Galileein the hillcountryof Naphtaliand Shechemin the hillcountryof Ephraim,and Kiriath-arba(that is, Hebron)in the hillcountryof Judah.
Now they buriedthe bonesof Joseph,whichthe sonsof Israelbroughtup from Egypt,at Shechem,in the pieceof groundwhichJacobhad boughtfrom the sonsof Hamorthe fatherof Shechemfor one hundredpiecesof money;and they becamethe inheritanceof Joseph'ssons.
Then Jerubbaal(that is, Gideon)and allthe peoplewhowere with him, roseearlyand campedbesidethe springof Harod;and the campof Midianwas on the northsideof them by the hillof Morehin the valley.
And Abimelechthe sonof Jerubbaalwentto Shechemto his mother'srelatives,and spoketo them and to the wholeclanof the householdof his mother'sfather,saying,
