He took[this] from their hand,and fashionedit with a gravingtooland madeit into a moltencalf;and they said,"Thisis your god,O Israel,whobroughtyou up from the landof Egypt."
So the kingconsulted,and madetwogoldencalves,and he saidto them, "It is toomuchfor you to goup to Jerusalem;beholdyour gods,O Israel,that broughtyou up from the landof Egypt."
Jeroboaminstituteda feastin the eighthmonthon the fifteenthdayof the month,like the feastwhichis in Judah,and he wentup to the altar;thushe didin Bethel,sacrificingto the calveswhichhe had made.And he stationedin Bethelthe priestsof the highplaceswhichhe had made.
And Jehusaid,"Sanctifya solemnassemblyfor Baal."And they proclaimed[it].
However,[as for] the sinsof Jeroboamthe sonof Nebat,whichhe made Israelsin,from these Jehudid not depart,[even] the goldencalvesthat [were] at Betheland that [were] at Dan.
He setup priestsof his own for the highplaces,for the satyrsand for the calveswhichhe had made.
"So nowyou intendto resistthe kingdomof the LORDthroughthe sonsof David,being a greatmultitudeand [having] with you the goldencalveswhichJeroboammadefor godsfor you.
"Evenwhenthey madefor themselves A calfof moltenmetalAnd said,'Thisis your GodWhobroughtyou up from Egypt,'And committedgreatblasphemies,
"I am the LORDyour God,whobroughtyou out of the landof Egypt,out of the houseof slavery.
You shall not make[other gods] besidesMe; godsof silveror godsof gold,you shall not makefor yourselves.
"You shall not makefor yourself an idol,or anylikenessof whatis in heavenaboveor on the earthbeneathor in the waterunderthe earth.
"As a jewelerengravesa signet,you shall engravethe twostonesaccordingto the namesof the sonsof Israel;you shall setthem in filigree[settings] of gold.
"You shall taketwoonyxstonesand engraveon them the namesof the sonsof Israel,
Now when the peoplesawthat Mosesdelayedto comedownfrom the mountain,the peopleassembledaboutAaronand saidto him, "Come,makeus a godwhowill gobeforeus; as for thisMoses,the manwhobroughtus up from the landof Egypt,we do not knowwhathas becomeof him."
"I saidto them, 'Whoeverhas any gold,let them tearit off.'So they gave[it] to me, and I threwit into the fire,and out camethiscalf."
Then allthe peopletoreoffthe goldringswhichwere in their earsand brought[them] to Aaron.
Then the LORDsmotethe people,becauseof whatthey didwith the calfwhichAaronhad made.
Now when Aaronsaw[this], he builtan altarbeforeit; and Aaronmadea proclamationand said,"Tomorrow[shall be] a feastto the LORD."
Then the LORDspoketo Moses,"Godownat once,for your people,whomyou broughtup from the landof Egypt,have corrupted[themselves].
"They have quicklyturnedasidefrom the waywhichI commandedthem. They have madefor themselves a moltencalf,and have worshipedit and have sacrificedto it and said,Thisis your god,O Israel,whobroughtyou up from the landof Egypt!'"
And you will defileyour gravenimagesoverlaidwith silver,and your moltenimagesplatedwith gold.You will scatterthem as an impurething,[and] sayto them, "Be gone!"
"Those who lavishgoldfrom the purseAnd weighsilveron the scaleHirea goldsmith,and he makesit [into] a god;They bowdown,indeedthey worshipit.
"She did not forsakeher harlotriesfrom [the time in] Egypt;for in her youthmen had lainwith her, and they handledher virginbosomand pouredout their luston her.
The inhabitantsof Samariawill fearFor the calfof Beth-aven.Indeed,its peoplewill mournfor it, And its idolatrouspriestswill cryout overit, Overits glory,sinceit has departedfrom it.
And nowthey sinmoreand more,And makefor themselves moltenimages,Idolsskillfullymade from their silver,Allof them the workof craftsmen.They sayof them, "Let the menwho sacrificekissthe calves!"
"Beingthenthe childrenof God,we oughtnot to thinkthat the Divine Natureis likegoldorsilverorstone,an image formedby the artand thoughtof man.
"At that timethey made a calfand broughta sacrificeto the idol,and were rejoicingin the worksof their hands.
Do not be idolaters,as someof them were; as it is written,"THE PEOPLESAT DOWNTO EATAND DRINK,AND STOODUP TO PLAY."
"And I sawthat you had indeedsinnedagainst the LORDyour God.You had madefor yourselves a moltencalf;you had turnedasidequicklyfrom the waywhichthe LORDhad commandedyou.
Yet Gideonsaidto them, "I would requestof you, that eachof you giveme an earringfrom his spoil."(For they had goldearrings,becausethey were Ishmaelites.)
Gideonmadeit into an ephod,and placedit in his city,Ophrah,and allIsraelplayedthe harlotwith it there,so that it becamea snareto Gideonand his household.
