Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

¹ A wiseson[accepts his] father'sdiscipline,But a scofferdoes not listento rebuke.

² From the fruitof a man'smouthhe enjoysgood,But the desireof the treacherousis violence.

³ The one who guardshis mouthpreserveshis life;The one who openswidehis lipscomes to ruin.

⁴ The soulof the sluggardcravesand [gets] nothing,But the soulof the diligentis madefat.

⁵ A righteousmanhatesfalsehood,But a wickedmanactsdisgustinglyand shamefully.

⁶ Righteousnessguardsthe one whose wayis blameless,But wickednesssubvertsthe sinner.

⁷ Thereis one who pretendsto be rich,but hasnothing;[Another] pretendsto be poor,but has greatwealth.

⁸ The ransomof a man'slifeis his wealth,But the poorhearsnorebuke.

⁹ The lightof the righteousrejoices,But the lampof the wickedgoesout.

¹⁰ Through insolencecomesnothingbut strife,But wisdomis with those who receivecounsel.

¹¹ Wealth[obtained] by frauddwindles,But the one who gathersby laborincreases[it].

¹² Hopedeferredmakesthe heartsick,But desirefulfilledis a treeof life.

¹³ The one who despisesthe wordwill be in debtto it, But the one who fearsthe commandmentwill be rewarded.

¹⁴ The teachingof the wiseis a fountainof life,To turnasidefrom the snaresof death.

¹⁵ Goodunderstandingproducesfavor,But the wayof the treacherousis hard.

¹⁶ Everyprudentmanactswith knowledge,But a fooldisplaysfolly.

¹⁷ A wickedmessengerfallsinto adversity,But a faithfulenvoy[brings] healing.

¹⁸ Povertyand shame[will come] to him who neglectsdiscipline,But he who regardsreproofwill be honored.

¹⁹ Desirerealizedis sweetto the soul,But it is an abominationto foolsto turnawayfrom evil.

²⁰ He who walkswith wisemenwill be wise,But the companionof foolswill sufferharm.

²¹ Adversitypursuessinners,But the righteouswill be rewardedwith prosperity.

²² A goodmanleavesan inheritanceto his children'schildren,And the wealthof the sinneris storedup for the righteous.

²³ Abundantfood[is in] the fallowgroundof the poor,But it is sweptawayby injustice.

²⁴ He who withholdshis rodhateshis son,But he who loveshim disciplineshim diligently.

²⁵ The righteoushasenoughto satisfyhis appetite,But the stomachof the wickedis in need.
