Allthe sonsof IsraelgrumbledagainstMosesand Aaron;and the wholecongregationsaidto them, "Wouldthat we had diedin the landof Egypt!Orwouldthat we had diedin thiswilderness!
But he himselfwenta day'sjourneyinto the wilderness,and cameand satdownundera junipertree;and he requestedfor himselfthat he might die,and said,"It is enough;now,O LORD,takemy life,for I am not betterthanmy fathers."
"Whydid I not dieat birth,Comeforthfrom the womband expire?
Then they despisedthe pleasantland;They did not believein His word,
But grumbledin their tents;They did not listento the voiceof the LORD.
And He rememberedHis covenantfor their sake, And relentedaccording to the greatnessof His lovingkindness.
Then they saidto Moses,"Is it becausetherewere nogravesin Egyptthat you have takenus away to diein the wilderness?Whyhave you dealtwith us in thisway,bringingus out of Egypt?
So the peoplegrumbledat Moses,saying,"Whatshall we drink?"
But the peoplethirstedtherefor water;and they grumbledagainstMosesand said,"Why,now,have you broughtus up from Egypt,to killus and our childrenand our livestockwith thirst?"
"Therefore now,O LORD,pleasetakemy lifefrom me, for deathis betterto me thanlife."
When the suncameup Godappointeda scorchingeastwind,and the sunbeatdownon Jonah'sheadso that he becamefaintand beggedwith [all] his soulto die,saying,"Deathis betterto me thanlife."
Now the peoplebecamelike those who complainof adversityin the hearingof the LORD;and when the LORDheard[it], His angerwas kindled,and the fireof the LORDburnedamong them and consumed[some] of the outskirtsof the camp.
"So ifYou are going to dealthuswith me, pleasekillme at once,ifI have foundfavorin Your sight,and do not let me seemy wretchedness."
"We rememberthe fishwhichwe used to eatfreein Egypt,the cucumbersand the melonsand the leeksand the onionsand the garlic,
Then allthe congregationliftedup their voicesand cried,and the peopleweptthat night.
"Surelyallthe menwho have seenMy gloryand My signswhichI performedin Egyptand in the wilderness,yet have putMe to the testthesetentimesand have not listenedto My voice,
"Is it not enoughthat you have broughtus up out of a landflowingwith milkand honeyto have us diein the wilderness,but you would alsolordit overus?
But on the nextdayallthe congregationof the sonsof IsraelgrumbledagainstMosesand Aaron,saying,"You are the ones who have causedthe deathof the LORD'Speople."
Mosestherefore spoketo the sonsof Israel,and alltheir leadersgavehim a rodapiece,for eachleaderaccording to their fathers'households,twelverods,with the rodof Aaronamongtheir rods.
There was nowaterfor the congregation,and they assembledthemselves againstMosesand Aaron.
The peoplethus contendedwith Mosesand spoke,saying,"Ifonlywe had perishedwhen our brothersperishedbeforethe LORD!
"Whythen have you broughtthe LORD'Sassemblyinto thiswilderness,for us and our beaststo diehere?
The peoplespokeagainst Godand Moses,"Whyhave you broughtus up out of Egyptto diein the wilderness?For thereis nofoodand nowater,and we loathethis miserablefood."
Norgrumble,as someof them did,and were destroyedby the destroyer.
and you grumbledin your tentsand said,'Because the LORDhatesus, He has broughtus out of the landof Egyptto deliverus into the handof the Amoritesto destroyus.
"When the LORDsentyou from Kadesh-barnea,saying,Goup and possessthe landwhichI have givenyou,' then you rebelledagainstthe commandof the LORDyour God;you neitherbelievedHim norlistenedto His voice.
For whoprovoked[Him] when they had heard?Indeed,did not allthosewhocameout of Egypt[led] by Moses?
Theseare grumblers,finding fault,followingaftertheir [own] lusts;they speakarrogantly,flatteringpeoplefor the sakeof [gaining an] advantage.
