and say,'We played the flutefor you, and you did not dance;we sang a dirge,and you did not mourn.'
When they cameto the threshingfloorof Atad,whichis beyondthe Jordan,they lamentedtherewith a verygreatand sorrowfullamentation;and he observedsevendaysmourningfor his father.
Allthe peoplewentup afterhim, and the peoplewere playingon flutesand rejoicingwith greatjoy,so that the earthshookat their noise.
You will havesongsas in the nightwhen you keepthe festival,And gladnessof heartas when one marchesto [the sound of] the flute,To goto the mountainof the LORD,to the Rockof Israel.
"AgainI will buildyou and you will be rebuilt,O virginof Israel!Againyou will takeup your tambourines,And goforthto the dancesof the merrymakers.
"But to whatshall I comparethisgeneration?It is likechildrensittingin the market places,whocallout to the other[children],
"For Johncameneithereatingnordrinking,and they say,He hasa demon!'
And Jesussaidto them, "The attendantsof the bridegroomcannotmournas longas the bridegroomis with them, can they? But the dayswill comewhenthe bridegroomis taken awayfrom them, and thenthey will fast.
When Jesuscameinto the official'shouse,and sawthe flute-playersand the crowdin noisy disorder,
"Nowhis oldersonwas in the field,and whenhe cameand approachedthe house,he heardmusicand dancing.
And followingHim was a largecrowdof the people,and of womenwhowere mourningand lamentingHim.
"They are likechildrenwho sitin the market placeand callto one another,and they say,'We played the flutefor you, and you did not dance;we sang a dirge,and you did not weep.'
Nowthey were allweepingand lamentingfor her; but He said,"Stopweeping,for she has not died,but is asleep."
