So that my soulwould choosesuffocation,Deathratherthanmy pains.
Now whenAhithophelsawthat his counselwas not followed,he saddled[his] donkeyand aroseand wentto his home,to his city,and sethis housein order,and strangledhimself; thus he diedand was buriedin the graveof his father.
Who longfor death,but thereis none,And digfor it morethanfor hiddentreasures,
Who rejoicegreatly,[And] exultwhenthey findthe grave?
Then You frightenme with dreamsAnd terrifyme by visions;
"I wasteaway;I will not liveforever.Leaveme alone,for my daysare [but] a breath.
"I am guiltless;I do not takenoticeof myself;I despisemy life.
So I hatedlife,for the workwhichhad been doneunderthe sunwas grievousto me; becauseeverythingis futilityand strivingafter wind.
"And deathwill be chosenratherthanlifeby allthe remnantthat remainsof thisevilfamily,that remainsin allthe placesto whichI have driventhem," declaresthe LORDof hosts.
"Therefore now,O LORD,pleasetakemy lifefrom me, for deathis betterto me thanlife."
When the suncameup Godappointeda scorchingeastwind,and the sunbeatdownon Jonah'sheadso that he becamefaintand beggedwith [all] his soulto die,saying,"Deathis betterto me thanlife."
And he threwthe pieces of silverinto the temple sanctuaryand departed;and he went awayand hangedhimself.
And in thosedaysmenwill seekdeathand will not findit; they will longto die,and deathfleesfrom them.
