They were stoned,they were sawn in two,they were tempted,they were put to deathwith the sword;they went aboutin sheepskins,in goatskins,being destitute,afflicted,ill-treated
He also broughtout the peoplewhowere in it, and set[them] under saws,sharpironinstruments,and ironaxes,and made them passthrough the brickkiln.And thushe didto allthe citiesof the sonsof Ammon.Then Davidand allthe peoplereturned[to] Jerusalem.
"Has it not been toldto my masterwhatI didwhen Jezebelkilledthe prophetsof the LORD,that I hida hundredprophetsof the LORDby fiftiesin a cave,and providedthem with breadand water?
for when Jezebeldestroyedthe prophetsof the LORD,Obadiahtooka hundredprophetsand hidthem by fiftiesin a cave,and providedthem with breadand water.)
Now AhabtoldJezebelallthat Elijahhad done,and howhe had killedallthe prophetswith the sword.
He said,"I have beenveryzealousfor the LORD,the Godof hosts;for the sonsof Israelhave forsakenYour covenant,torndownYour altarsand killedYour prophetswith the sword.And I aloneam left;and they seekmy life,to takeit away."
When Elijahheard[it], he wrappedhis facein his mantleand wentout and stoodin the entranceof the cave.And behold,a voice[came] to him and said,"Whatare you doing here,Elijah?"
Then he said,"I have beenveryzealousfor the LORD,the Godof hosts;for the sonsof Israelhave forsakenYour covenant,torndownYour altarsand killedYour prophetswith the sword.And I aloneam left;and they seekmy life,to takeit away."
So he departedfrom thereand foundElishathe sonof Shaphat,while he was plowingwith twelvepairs[of oxen] beforehim, and he with the twelfth.And Elijahpassedoverto him and threwhis mantleon him.
and seattwoworthlessmenbeforehim, and let them testifyagainst him, saying,You cursedGodand the king.'Then takehim out and stonehim to death."
They answeredhim, "[He was] a hairymanwith a leathergirdleboundabout his loins."And he said,"It is Elijahthe Tishbite."
He also tookup the mantleof Elijahthat fellfrom him and returnedand stoodby the bankof the Jordan.
Elijahtookhis mantleand foldedit togetherand struckthe waters,and they were dividedhereand there,so that the twoof them crossedoveron dryground.
He broughtout the peoplewho[were] in it, and cut[them] with sawsand with sharpinstrumentsand with axes.And thusDaviddidto allthe citiesof the sonsof Ammon.Then Davidand allthe peoplereturned[to] Jerusalem.
So they conspiredagainsthim and at the commandof the kingthey stonedhim to deathin the courtof the houseof the LORD.
"In vainI have struckyour sons;They acceptednochastening.Your swordhas devouredyour prophetsLike a destroyinglion.
And they broughtUriahfrom Egyptand ledhim to KingJehoiakim,who slewhim with a swordand casthis deadbodyinto the burialplaceof the commonpeople.
"Also it will comeabout in that daythat the prophetswill eachbe ashamedof his visionwhen he prophesies,and they will not puton a hairyrobein orderto deceive;
"And I will bringthe thirdpartthrough the fire,Refinethem as silveris refined,And testthem as goldis tested.They will callon My name,And I will answerthem; I will say,They are My people,'And they will say,'The LORDis my God.'"
"The vine-growerstookhis slavesand beatone,and killedanother,and stoneda third.
NowJohnhimselfhada garmentof camel'shairand a leatherbeltaroundhis waist;and his foodwas locustsand wildhoney.
Jesussaidto him, "The foxeshaveholesand the birdsof the air[have] nests,but the Sonof Manhasnowhereto layHis head."
"O Jerusalem,Jerusalem,[the city] that killsthe prophetsand stonesthosesentto her! How oftenI wantedto gatheryour childrentogether,justas a hen[gathers] her broodunderher wings,and you wouldnot [have it]!
But Jewscamefrom Antiochand Iconium,and having won overthe crowds,they stonedPauland draggedhim out of the city,supposinghim to be dead.
"Which oneof the prophetsdid your fathersnot persecute?They killedthosewho had previously announcedthe comingof the Righteous One,whosebetrayersand murderersyou have nowbecome;
ThereforeI am well contentwith weaknesses,with insults,with distresses,with persecutions,with difficulties,for Christ'ssake;for whenI am weak,thenI amstrong.
choosingratherto endure ill-treatmentwith the peopleof Godthanto enjoythe passingpleasuresof sin,
Rememberthe prisoners,as thoughin prisonwith them, [and] thosewho are ill-treated,sinceyou yourselvesalsoare in the body.
"And I will grant[authority] to my twowitnesses,and they will prophesyfor twelvehundredand sixtydays,clothedin sackcloth."
