otherwiseyou mightmakea covenantwith the inhabitantsof the landand they would playthe harlotwith their godsand sacrificeto their gods,and someone might inviteyou to eatof his sacrifice,
But they actedtreacherouslyagainst the Godof their fathersand playedthe harlotafterthe godsof the peoplesof the land,whomGodhad destroyedbeforethem.
"Whateveris needed,both youngbulls,rams,and lambsfor a burntofferingto the Godof heaven,and wheat,salt,wineand anointingoil,as the priestsin Jerusalemrequest,[it] is to be givento them dailywithoutfail,
So nowdo not giveyour daughtersto their sonsnortaketheir daughtersto your sons,and neverseektheir peaceor their prosperity,that you may be strongand eatthe good[things] of the landand leave[it] as an inheritanceto your sonsforever.'
They joinedthemselves also to Baal-peor,And atesacrificesoffered to the dead.
For, behold,those who are farfrom You will perish;You have destroyedallthose who are unfaithfulto You.
"Whoeverlieswith an animalshall surelybe putto death.
"He who sacrificesto any god,otherthanto the LORDalone,shall be utterlydestroyed.
"You shall makenocovenantwith them or with their gods.
"They have quicklyturnedasidefrom the waywhichI commandedthem. They have madefor themselves a moltencalf,and have worshipedit and have sacrificedto it and said,Thisis your god,O Israel,whobroughtyou up from the landof Egypt!'"
Then God said,"Behold,I am going to makea covenant.Beforeallyour peopleI will performmiracleswhichhave not been producedin allthe earthnoramong anyof the nations;and allthe peopleamongwhomyou live will seethe workingof the LORD,for it is a fearfulthingthat I am going to performwith you.
"Watchyourself that you makenocovenantwith the inhabitantsof the landinto whichyou are going,orit will becomea snarein your midst.
"Becauseof the lightnessof her harlotry,she pollutedthe landand committedadulterywith stonesand trees.
My peopleconsulttheir woodenidol, and their [diviner's] wandinformsthem; For a spiritof harlotryhas led[them] astray,And they have playedthe harlot,[departing] from their God.
Do not rejoice,O Israel,with exultationlike the nations!For you have playedthe harlot,forsakingyour God.You have loved[harlots]' earningson everythreshingfloor.
"They shall nolongersacrificetheir sacrificesto the goatdemonswith whichthey playthe harlot.Thisshall be a permanentstatuteto them throughout their generations."'
"It shall be a tasselfor you to lookat and rememberallthe commandmentsof the LORD,so as to dothem and not followafteryour own heartand your own eyes,afterwhichyou playedthe harlot,
While Israelremainedat Shittim,the peoplebeganto playthe harlotwith the daughtersof Moab.
For they invitedthe peopleto the sacrificesof their gods,and the peopleateand boweddownto their gods.
but that we writeto them that they abstainfrom things contaminatedby idolsand from fornicationand from what is strangledand from blood.
Ifoneof the unbelieversinvitesyou and you wantto go,eatanythingthat is set beforeyou withoutasking questionsfor conscience'sake.
For ifsomeoneseesyou, who haveknowledge,diningin an idol's temple,will not his conscience,if he is weak,be strengthenedto eatthings sacrificed to idols?
Thereforeconcerningthe eatingof things sacrificed to idols,we knowthat there is nosuch thingas an idolin the world,and that there is noGodbut one.
Howevernot all menhave thisknowledge;but some,being accustomedto the idoluntilnow,eat[food] as ifit were sacrificed to an idol;and their consciencebeingweakis defiled.
The LORDsaidto Moses,"Behold,you are about to liedownwith your fathers;and thispeoplewill ariseand playthe harlotwith the strangegodsof the land,into the midstof whichthey are going,and will forsakeMe and breakMy covenantwhichI have madewith them.
"But I will surelyhideMy facein that daybecauseof allthe evilwhichthey will do,for they will turnto othergods.
"And He will say,Whereare their gods,The rockin which they soughtrefuge?
Whoatethe fatof their sacrifices,[And] drankthe wineof their drinkoffering?Let them riseup and helpyou, Let them be your hidingplace!
and when the LORDyour Goddeliversthem beforeyou and you defeatthem, then you shall utterlydestroythem. You shall makenocovenantwith them and shownofavorto them.
"Furthermore, you shall not intermarrywith them; you shall not giveyour daughtersto their sons,norshall you taketheir daughtersfor your sons.
"For ifyou evergobackand clingto the restof thesenations,thesewhich remainamongyou, and intermarrywith them, so that you associatewith them and they with you,
But I have[this] againstyou, that you toleratethe womanJezebel,who callsherselfa prophetess,and she teachesand leadsMy bond-servantsastrayso that they commit [acts of] immoralityand eatthings sacrificed to idols.
Yetthey did not listento their judges,for they playedthe harlotafterothergodsand bowedthemselves downto them. They turnedasidequicklyfrom the wayin whichtheir fathershad walkedin obeyingthe commandmentsof the LORD;they didnot doas [their fathers].
and they tooktheir daughtersfor themselves as wives,and gavetheir own daughtersto their sons,and servedtheir gods.
