Allthe peopleperceivedthe thunderand the lightningflashesand the soundof the trumpetand the mountainsmoking;and when the peoplesaw[it], they trembledand stoodat a distance.
It cameabout when the sunhad set,that it was verydark,and behold,[there appeared] a smokingovenand a flamingtorchwhichpassedbetweenthesepieces.
He said,"I heardthe soundof You in the garden,and I was afraidbecauseI was naked;so I hidmyself."
"You calledin troubleand I rescuedyou; I answeredyou in the hidingplaceof thunder;I provedyou at the watersof Meribah.Selah.
"Am I a Godwho is near,"declaresthe LORD,"And not a Godfaroff?
"This is according to allthat you askedof the LORDyour Godin Horebon the dayof the assembly,saying,'Let me not hearagainthe voiceof the LORDmy God,let me not seethisgreatfireanymore,orI will die.'
"Out of the heavensHe let you hearHis voiceto disciplineyou; and on earthHe let you seeHis greatfire,and you heardHis wordsfrom the midstof the fire.
"And when you heardthe voicefrom the midstof the darkness,while the mountainwas burningwith fire,you camenearto me, allthe headsof your tribesand your elders.
Nowthen whyshould we die?For thisgreatfirewill consumeus; ifwe hearthe voiceof the LORDour Godanylonger,then we will die.
Gonearand hearallthat the LORDour Godsays;then speakto us allthat the LORDour Godspeaksto you, and we will hearand do[it].'
[while] I was standingbetweenthe LORDand you at that time,to declareto you the wordof the LORD;for you were afraidbecauseof the fireand did not goup the mountain.He said,
