Manasseh  was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hephzibah.

He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight,  imitating the detestable practices of the nations that the Lord had dispossessed before the Israelites.

I will make them an object of horror  and a disaster to all the kingdoms of the earth, an example for disgrace, scorn, ridicule,  and cursing, wherever I have banished them.


I will pursue them with sword, famine, and plague. I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth #– #a curse and a desolation, an object of scorn and a disgrace among all the nations  where I have banished them.


‘Therefore, this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming freedom, each for his fellow Hebrew and for his neighbour.  I hereby proclaim freedom for you   #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #to the sword, to plague, and to famine! I will make you a horror to all the earth’s kingdoms.


I will scatter them among the nations  that they and their ancestors have not known. I will send a sword after them until I have finished them off.’


Jerusalem has sinned grievously; therefore, she has become an object of scorn. All who honoured her now despise her, for they have seen her nakedness. She herself groans and turns away.


But you may ask, “Why doesn’t the son suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity? ”  Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all my statutes, he will certainly live.


‘This is what the Lord God says: Summon  an assembly against them and consign them to terror and plunder.


But I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw a sword to chase after you. So your land will become desolate, and your cities will become ruins.


The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march out against them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions.  You will be an object of horror  to all the kingdoms of the earth.


Then the Lord will scatter you among all peoples from one end of the earth to the other,  and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone,  which neither you nor your ancestors have known.
