Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, ‘It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.’

Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, ‘It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.’
But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
‘So now this is what you are to say to my servant David: “This is what the Lord of Armies says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.
Abijam walked in all the sins his father before him had committed, and he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God as his ancestor David had been.
For David did what was right in the Lord’s sight, and he did not turn aside from anything he had commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hethite.
Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the Lord because he did not keep the Lord’s word. He even consulted a medium for guidance,
then also my covenant with my servant David may be broken. If that could happen, then he would not have a son reigning on his throne and the Levitical priests would not be my ministers.
then I might also reject the descendants of Jacob and of my servant David. That is, I would not take rulers from his descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But in fact, I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.’
I will establish over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will shepherd them. He will tend them himself and will be their shepherd.
Afterwards, the people of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come with awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the last days.
For David, after serving God’s purpose in his own generation, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and decayed,
And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he also did to us.
He found favour in God’s sight and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
However, if you continue to do what is evil, both you and your king will be swept away.’
‘I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned away from following me and has not carried out my instructions.’ So Samuel became angry and cried out to the Lord all night.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and defiance is like wickedness and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.
Samuel replied to Saul, ‘I will not return with you. Because you rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.’
Samuel said to him, ‘The Lord has torn the kingship of Israel away from you today and has given it to your neighbour who is better than you.
The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have selected for myself a king from his sons.’
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.
Samuel answered, ‘Since the Lord has turned away from you and has become your enemy, why are you asking me?
So on that day, Saul died together with his three sons, his armour-bearer, and all his men.
