After the death of Saul,  David returned from defeating the Amalekites  and stayed at Ziklag for two days.


They mourned, wept, and fasted until the evening  for those who died by the sword #– #for Saul, his son Jonathan, the Lord’s people, and the house of Israel.


So Saul and his three sons died #– #his whole house died together.


He quickly called his armour-bearer and said to him, ‘Draw your sword and kill me, or they’ll say about me, “A woman killed him.” ’ So his armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.


So all the people went to Gilgal, and there in the Lord’s presence  they made Saul king. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings  in the Lord’s presence, and Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.


Isn’t the wheat harvest today?  I will call on the Lord, and he will send thunder and rain so that you will recognise what an immense evil you committed in the Lord’s sight by requesting a king for yourselves.’


However, if you continue to do what is evil, both you and your king will be swept away.’


David added, ‘As the Lord lives, the Lord will certainly strike him down:  either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.


The Lord will also hand Israel over to the Philistines along with you. Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me,  , and the Lord will hand Israel’s army over to the Philistines.’


When his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him.


When the men of Israel on the other side of the valley and on the other side of the Jordan saw that Israel’s men had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. So the Philistines came and settled in them.
