"On exactlythe tenthday of thisseventhmonthis the dayof atonement;it shall be a holyconvocationfor you, and you shall humbleyour soulsand presentan offeringby fireto the LORD.
Then I proclaimeda fastthereat the riverof Ahava,that we might humbleourselves beforeour Godto seekfrom Him a safejourneyfor us, our littleones,and allour possessions.
But as for me, when they were sick,my clothingwas sackcloth;I humbledmy soulwith fasting,And my prayerkept returningto my bosom.
"Aaronshall makeatonementon its hornsoncea year;he shall makeatonementon it with the bloodof the sinofferingof atonementoncea yearthroughout your generations.It is mostholyto the LORD."
"Is it a fastlike thiswhich I choose,a dayfor a manto humblehimself?Is it for bowingone's headlike a reedAnd for spreadingout sackclothand ashesas a bed? Will you callthisa fast,even an acceptabledayto the LORD?
"Then Aaronshall offerthe bullof the sinofferingwhichis for himself and makeatonementfor himself and for his household,and he shall slaughterthe bullof the sinofferingwhichis for himself.
"Then he shall slaughterthe goatof the sinofferingwhichis for the people,and bringits bloodinsidethe veiland dowith its bloodas he didwith the bloodof the bull,and sprinkleit on the mercyseatand in frontof the mercyseat.
"He shall makeatonementfor the holyplace, becauseof the impuritiesof the sonsof Israeland becauseof their transgressionsin regard to alltheir sins;and thushe shall dofor the tentof meetingwhich abideswith them in the midstof their impurities.
"He shall bathehis bodywith waterin a holyplaceand puton his clothes,and comeforthand offerhis burntofferingand the burntofferingof the peopleand makeatonementfor himself and for the people.
The LORDspoketo Moses,saying,
"You shall not doanyworkon thissameday,for it is a dayof atonement,to makeatonementon your behalfbeforethe LORDyour God.
You shall then sounda ram'shornabroad on the tenthday of the seventhmonth;on the dayof atonementyou shall sounda hornallthrough your land.
"I will pourout on the houseof Davidand on the inhabitantsof Jerusalem,the Spiritof graceand of supplication,so that they will lookon Me whomthey have pierced;and they will mournfor Him, as one mournsfor an onlyson,and they will weepbitterlyoverHim like the bitterweepingovera firstborn.
When considerabletimehad passedand the voyagewas nowdangerous,sinceeventhe fastwas alreadyover,Paul[began] to admonishthem,
Be miserableand mournand weep;let your laughterbe turnedinto mourningand your joyto gloom.
