He calledthe nameof that placeBethel;however,previouslythe nameof the cityhad been Luz.
Then he proceededfrom thereto the mountainon the eastof Bethel,and pitchedhis tent,with Bethelon the westand Aion the east;and therehe builtan altarto the LORDand calledupon the nameof the LORD.
He cameto a certain placeand spentthe nightthere,becausethe sunhad set;and he tookone of the stonesof the placeand putit under his head,and laydownin that place.
I am the God[of] Bethel,whereyou anointeda pillar,whereyou madea vowto Me; nowarise,leavethisland,and returnto the landof your birth.'"
Then Godsaidto Jacob,"Arise,goup to Betheland livethere,and makean altarthereto God,who appearedto you when you fledfrom your brotherEsau."
Jacobsetup a pillarin the placewhereHe had spokenwith him, a pillarof stone,and he pouredout a drinkofferingon it; he also pouredoilon it.
So Jacobnamedthe placewhereGodhad spokenwith him, Bethel.
So Jacobcameto Luz(that is, Bethel),whichis in the landof Canaan,he and allthe peoplewhowere with him.
He builtan altarthere,and calledthe placeEl-bethel,becausethereGodhad revealedHimself to him when he fledfrom his brother.
Then Jacobsaidto Joseph,"GodAlmightyappearedto me at Luzin the landof Canaanand blessedme,
He setonein Bethel,and the otherhe putin Dan.
Elijahsaidto Elisha,"Stayhereplease,for the LORDhas sentme as faras Bethel."But Elishasaid,"As the LORDlivesand as you yourselflive,I will not leaveyou." So they wentdownto Bethel.
AbijahpursuedJeroboamand capturedfrom him [several] cities,Bethelwith its villages,Jeshanahwith its villagesand Ephronwith its villages.

It wentfrom Bethelto Luz,and continuedto the borderof the Architesat Ataroth.
From therethe bordercontinuedto Luz,to the sideof Luz(that is, Bethel)southward;and the borderwentdownto Ataroth-addar,nearthe hillwhich[lies] on the southof lowerBeth-horon.
And he tookabout 5,000menand setthem in ambushbetweenBetheland Ai,on the westsideof the city.
Then allthe sonsof Israeland allthe peoplewentup and cameto Betheland wept;thus they remainedtherebeforethe LORDand fastedthat dayuntilevening.And they offeredburntofferingsand peaceofferingsbeforethe LORD.
"Then you will goon furtherfrom there,and you will comeas faras the oakof Tabor,and therethreemengoingup to Godat Bethelwill meetyou, onecarryingthreeyounggoats,anothercarryingthreeloavesof bread,and anothercarryinga jugof wine;
He used to goannuallyon circuitto Betheland Gilgaland Mizpah,and he judgedIsraelin alltheseplaces.
