At the morningwatch,the LORDlookeddownon the armyof the Egyptiansthrough the pillarof fireand cloudand broughtthe armyof the Egyptiansinto confusion.
"You say,Whatdoes Godknow?Can He judgethroughthe thickdarkness?
"In a momentthey die,and at midnightPeopleare shakenand passaway,And the mightyare takenawaywithouta hand.
When He keepsquiet,whothen can condemn?And when He hidesHis face,whothen can beholdHim, That is, in regardto bothnationand man?--
"Lookon everyonewhois proud,[and] humblehim, And treaddownthe wickedwherethey stand.
He looksat the earth,and it trembles;He touchesthe mountains,and they smoke.
They saw[it], thenthey were amazed;They were terrified,they fledin alarm.
Then He ledthem with the cloudby dayAnd allthe nightwith a lightof fire.
For a thousandyearsin Your sightAre like yesterdaywhenit passesby, Or [as] a watchin the night.
The LORDwas goingbeforethem in a pillarof cloudby dayto leadthem on the way,and in a pillarof fireby nightto givethem light,that they might travelby dayand by night.
He caused their chariotwheelsto swerve,and He made them drivewith difficulty;so the Egyptianssaid,"Let us fleefrom Israel,for the LORDis fightingfor them against the Egyptians."
"And thoughthey gointo captivitybeforetheir enemies,From thereI will commandthe swordthat it slaythem, And I will setMy eyesagainstthem for eviland not for good."
The nextmorningSaulputthe peoplein threecompanies;and they cameinto the midstof the campat the morningwatchand struckdownthe Ammonitesuntilthe heatof the day.Those who survivedwere scattered,so that notwoof them were lefttogether.
