then his brother'swifeshall cometo him in the sightof the elders,and pullhis sandaloffhis footand spitin his face;and she shall declare,'Thusit is doneto the manwhodoes not buildup his brother'shouse.'
"They abhorme [and] standalooffrom me, And they do not refrainfrom spittingat my face.
at that timethe LORDspokethroughIsaiahthe sonof Amoz,saying,"Goand loosenthe sackclothfrom your hipsand takeyour shoesoffyour feet."And he didso,goingnakedand barefoot.
I gaveMy backto those who strike[Me], And My cheeksto those who pluckout the beard;I did not coverMy facefrom humiliationand spitting.
But the LORDsaidto Moses,"If her fatherhad but spitin her face,would she not bearher shamefor sevendays?Let her be shutup for sevendaysoutsidethe camp,and afterwardshe may be receivedagain."
Thenthey spatin His faceand beat Him with their fists;and othersslappedHim,
They spaton Him, and tookthe reedand [began] to beatHim on the head.
And he was preaching,and saying,"Afterme One is comingwho is mightierthan I, and I amnot fitto stoop downand untiethe thongof His sandals.
"They will mockHim and spiton Him, and scourgeHim and kill[Him], and threedayslaterHe will rise again."
"[It is] He who comesafterme, the thongof whosesandalI amnot worthyto untie."
"In Israelhis nameshall be called,'The houseof him whose sandalis removed.'
"Then the eldersof his cityshall summonhim and speakto him. And [if] he persistsand says,'I do not desireto takeher,'
The closestrelativesaid,"I cannotredeem[it] for myself, becauseI would jeopardizemy own inheritance.Redeem[it] for yourself; you [may have] my rightof redemption,for I cannotredeem[it]."
"Thereforethe LORDGodof Israeldeclares,I did indeedsaythat your houseand the houseof your fathershould walkbeforeMe forever;but nowthe LORDdeclares,'Farbe it from Me-- for those who honorMe I will honor,and those who despiseMe will be lightlyesteemed.
