But he himselfwenta day'sjourneyinto the wilderness,and cameand satdownundera junipertree;and he requestedfor himselfthat he might die,and said,"It is enough;now,O LORD,takemy life,for I am not betterthanmy fathers."
"Therefore now,O LORD,pleasetakemy lifefrom me, for deathis betterto me thanlife."
"So ifYou are going to dealthuswith me, pleasekillme at once,ifI have foundfavorin Your sight,and do not let me seemy wretchedness."
When the suncameup Godappointeda scorchingeastwind,and the sunbeatdownon Jonah'sheadso that he becamefaintand beggedwith [all] his soulto die,saying,"Deathis betterto me thanlife."
Whatthen?Are we betterthan they? Not at all;for we have already chargedthat bothJewsand Greeksare allundersin;
and Jacob'swellwas there.SoJesus,being weariedfrom His journey,was sittingthusby the well.It was aboutthe sixthhour.
Are you betterthanNo-amon,Which was situatedby the watersof the Nile,With watersurroundingher, Whoserampart[was] the sea,Whose wall[consisted] of the sea?
Gooverto Calnehand look,And gofrom thereto Hamaththe great,Then godownto Gathof the Philistines.Are they betterthanthesekingdoms,Oris their territorygreaterthanyours?
As they were goingalong and talking,behold,[there appeared] a chariotof fireand horsesof firewhich separatedthe twoof them. And Elijahwentup by a whirlwindto heaven.
And he was afraidand aroseand ranfor his lifeand cameto Beersheba,whichbelongs to Judah,and lefthis servantthere.
So he wentafterthe manof Godand foundhim sittingunderan oak;and he saidto him, "Are you the manof Godwhocamefrom Judah?"And he said,"I am."
"Lookat the birdsof the air,that they do not sow,norreapnorgatherinto barns,and [yet] your heavenlyFatherfeedsthem. Are you not worthmuchmorethan they?
He laydownand sleptundera junipertree;and behold,therewas an angeltouchinghim, and he saidto him, "Arise,eat."
"Would that Godwere willingto crushme, That He would looseHis handand cutme off!
But if I say,"I will not rememberHim Or speakanymorein His name,"Then in my heartit becomeslike a burningfireShutup in my bones;And I am wearyof holding[it] in, And I cannotendure[it].
"Ohthat my requestmight cometo pass,And that Godwould grantmy longing!
